I visited Ottawa recently and gazed out over the beautiful Rideau Canal, with the sun glaring off its ice. People were everywhere........skating, smiling and generally loving life along the Canal.

Then, oddly, I had a sense of guilt; a slight pang in my stomach. I realized I have never skated on the Rideau Canal. Despite all of my trips to Ottawa (and there have been many) I've never skated the Canal. I am a seasoned traveller having been to Mexico, Cuba, Panama, Spain, Portugal, the U.S.A. But yet, i've never taken part in this purely Canadian tradition.

Kind of got me to thinking, maybe I should spend more time taking in our natural wonders and less time on foreign, sandy beaches. Next time I go to Ottawa, i'm taking my skates with me. But, mind you, I am still going to do the foreign sandy beaches.
