As of 10:40 a.m. ET on Wednesday April 8, 2020, Canada had 18,447 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19.
I find that I am having a tough time listening to talk radio, which is my usual "go to". It's becoming repetitive and depressing. Instead, I am listening to our local country music station, Kx96. They provide fine news coverage, but it's not overwhelming.
There are many new societal norms that none of us could have ever expected. People wearing masks in public, lines ups to get into the LCBO and grocery stores, due to social distancing. LCBO and grocery stores have good stock, but you can definitely see where some items are low. The check out counters resemble plastic fortresses to protect the staff. The essential business list is a little confusing, as you can still see construction going on, usually small residential projects. Hardware/building supply stores are open but you have to pre-order your product and pick it up in the parking lot. Sporting goods stores remain open, also with parking lot pick up. Of note, firearms and ammunition sales are at record levels.
Daily phone calls and texts to family and friends are necessary to keep in touch and to preserve our sanity. We also reach out daily to my in-laws to see if they need anything.
I am lucky, i'm working; as is my wife. I will never, ever complain about my job again. The daily routine now involves a truck ride with the dog, which he is not used to. His hearing of late has become as powerful as NORAD radar. If I put my boots on, he somehow hears me and runs to the door and starts vibrating. "truck ride daddy! truck ride daddy!"
It's funny how the little things make you feel better. I saw a garden centre being set up at the local Canadian Tire and it was just so refreshing to see; it felt "normal" for a few minutes. Little things.......
Rumours abound, and I try not to get caught up in them but it is tough. My colleague texted me to tell me to buy chicken, immediately. She "heard" the Maple Leaf chicken processing facility in Brampton was shutting down due to a worker having COVID-19. The plant will need to be deep cleaned and she was told this would cause a short term chicken shortage in Ontario. I found nothing on the internet to confirm this, but who knows.
COVID-19 testing seems to be an issue in Ontario and we are doing the least tests per capita. As with most other things COVID-19, I am not sure why but Premier Doug Ford publicly demanded increased testing.
Finally, I had a good cry. I received the news that a member of my family was not feeling well and had been tested for COVID-19. Results in 48 hours. I am trying to stay calm and positive, but it is very, very difficult.
48 long hours.
More to come on that, but until we know the results I am not going to identify the person.
Please remember, try to stay positive, follow the rules, help where you can and be kind.
