I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend and made the best of the holiday, in their own way. Today, we are back to "normal" whatever that means nowadays.
As of 6:53 a.m. ET on Tuesday April 14, 2020:
Canada had 25680 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19. An increase of 1297 confirmed cases from April 13, 2020.
Ontario reported 7470 cases of COVID-19 on Monday.
The Region of Durham reported another 14 cases of COVID-19 on Monday. That brings the total number of cases across the region to 368, with 124 recovered and 22 dead. Of the active cases, 31 are currently in hospital. The rest are isolating at home. In total, 14 of the people in Durham who have died from COVID-19 were residents at long-term care facilities and retirement homes.
In Canada, fully half of the reported COVID-19 deaths have been from Long Term Care facilities.
The United States is an absolute gong-show right now. Yesterday, President Trump stated he has "absolute power" in an absolutely bizarre news conference that included a video praising the President. Who really knows? The U.S. is so divided right now that little can be taken at face value anymore.
In the national news; we have been told by Ontario Premier Doug Ford to stay home and not go to our cottages. Yet, our Prime Minister Justin Trudeau went to his cottage with family, over the Easter Weekend. As did the leader of the official opposition, Andrew Scheer. Quite the example they are setting. The "commoners" are to remain home, isolated. The rich and/or powerful may do as they please. Disgusting...
For my part, I no longer listen to our Prime Minister's daily cheerleading "media conferences". The media scrums are nonsense and he answers, nothing. Platitudes and repeated "messages", but he rarely answers a question. Deflect, deflect, deflect. He could learn a lesson or two from Doug Ford.
Canada relies heavily on migrant workers in our Agri-food industry, which is presenting many health issues. The federal government appears to be addressing this complicated issue. Whether we like it or not, we need these migrant workers so that we have food. Let's face it, Canadian's don't want to work on farms, so somebody has to.
In Ontario, a bizarre story about a couple that have been evicted from their houseboat? The owner Kyle Mayne said "We live here for only half the year. In May, we live in a trailer at a Cherry Valley campground until the fall,” said Kyle on Friday afternoon. “Now that they’re closed because of the virus, we have to stay here.”
Ontario plans to extend the state of emergency for another 28 days. This was expected. A state of emergency declaration can be extended by no more than 14 days with approval by the Lieutenant Governor, but it requires a vote by the legislature to be extended by 28 days. Queen's Park is to sit today and it is expected the extension will pass with no issues.
Toronto public health officials dropped a reality bomb: 12 weeks of “unprecedented” measures would be necessary to contain the COVID-19 pandemic. Medical officer of health Dr. Eileen de Villa used her legal powers to order new restrictions that would continue until late June, and the city cancelled events until June 30.
Locally, a police investigation has been launched into the massive fire at Algoma Orchards over the Easter Weekend. Sources set the damage at 6 million dollars.
Within the Region of Durham, Oshawa is reporting the most COVID-19 cases within the 8 municipalities.
The weather is going to suck this week, with snow flurries predicted for tomorrow and Wednesday. But, maybe that's good in terms of keeping people inside and observing social distancing. We were out and about this weekend (only from the truck, no socializing) and we saw very few gatherings and people appeared to be observing social distancing.
If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, there is a breathing technique that is being touted as a remedy, of sorts. No idea if it actually works, but hey, it can't hurt. Here is the link.
Please remember, try to stay positive, follow the rules, help where you can and be kind.
