Lygentzia *473 (Some good news on a Sunday-Funday) Sunday, May 10, 2020 (Ontario/up)

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 4,169,071. (Deaths: 283,218 and Recovered: 1,468,789) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 5:18 p.m. ET on Sunday May 10, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 68,743 confirmed cases of COVID-19. I am guesssing it will pass 70,00 by days end tomorrow.

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 20,238 total confirmed cases and 1,634 deaths. Currently, 961 people are in hospital, with 195 of those in ICU.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 37,721.

The Region of Durham reported 1,162 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 15 current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 7 of the outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, there are 71 cases in Clarington.

In international news,
From the "Well, it had to happen, sooner or later" file, Coronavirus was found in patients' semen in small Chinese study. The virus that causes COVID-19 can be found in semen, Chinese researchers report in a small study that doesn't address whether sexual transmission is possible.

In national news,

Justin says we (Canada) is still in the emergency phase. I wouldn't know; I had yet to see him actually answer a substantive question in his daily "briefings"....which I no longer watch live.

From the "Good luck with that" file, the federal government is looking at training unemployed Canadians to help in long-term care homes says the employment minister. Oh sure! They will stop sitting home , stop collecting CERB, stop watching Netflix, to run out and go clean long-term care homes. Ya, sure. Good luck with that, it will never happen.

64 workers are infected with COVID-19 at one of the Cargill meat processing plants in Quebec. The outbreak will cause the temporary closure of the Monteregie plant. Meat shortages are coming, folks. Get ready....

In Ontario,
Great news! Today, the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases were reported in Ontario since March. Health officials reported another dip in new COVID-19 cases in Ontario on Sunday morning with 294 new confirmed cases. This marks the lowest number of new cases reported by the province since March 31. New case numbers in Ontario have been generally trending downwards in recent days, with less than 400 cases reported daily in the last week. The only exception was the 477 new cases reported on Friday.

The Ontario education minister hopes to release the plan for the rest of the school year in the coming days. This is going to be a tough call, to be sure.

Locally,
Darlington Provincial Park is re-opening Friday, for day use only. Monday will see the re-opening of 295 conservation reserves and 225 “non-operating” parks. There are 115 “operating” parks, including Darlington and Algonquin. The parks will be open for “limited day-use access”. You’ll be able to hike, bike or birdwatch – although you’ll have to keep a 2-metre distance around you. Washrooms, beaches and campgrounds will continue to be off-limits. No washrooms eh? Hm.....so, bring your own toilet paper. The park will supply the tree to hide behind.

A confirmed case of COVID-19 at the Oshawa Costco. Glendene Collins, a spokesperson for the health department, says there were no other contacts for the confirmed case and that a company was brought in to do a "deep cleaning" of the store.
