Lygenztia *464 (We made it through April!) Friday May 1, 2020 (Ontario/up)

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 3,350,976. (Deaths: 236,80 and Recovered: 1,062,694) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:48 a.m. ET on Friday May 1, 2020:
Canada reported 53,669 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19.

The official Province of Ontario website reported 16,608 cases. An increase of 872 cases from yesterday.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 27,538.

The Region of Durham reported 955 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (The daily is up by 22 from yesterday) The site also reports 11 (an increase of 1) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 5 outbreaks now having been resolved. (up from 3)

In international news,
In Mexico, the Jalisco ciminal Cartel has began distributing food in Puerto Vallarta. I am not making this up, folks. The drug gangs are feeding the people, think about that for a second.

An update of sorts on a potential vaccine. From Vice news, What We Know About Remdesivir, the Antiviral Drug Dr. Fauci Says 'Can Block This Virus'.

Is the global trading system unravelling before our eyes? Why? A combination of conditions: a pandemic, a trade-skeptical U.S. president, simmering frustration with China, and a growing great-power rivalry.

In national news,
From the "As if things weren't bad enough" file, Fort McMurray has been dealing with a dual crisis — the pandemic and a flood that has forced nearly 13,000 people from their homes. These Canadians need help and we need to send it, fast.

From the "How in the heck did that happen?" file, Pond Inlet, Nunavut confirmed its first case of COVID-19. The territory’s rapid response team is on the way to the small, isolated community to help manage the situation. Pond Inlet has a population of around 1,600 and is generally accessed exclusively by plane.

In Ontario,
From the "This is going to come back to bite you in the ass" file, there appears to be a growing divide between permanent and part-time residents in cottage country across Ontario as concerns mount regarding the spread of the coronavirus. Sorry, northern residents but you can't have it both ways. In "normal" times you rely on cottagers for your economy, now you don't want them? As long as they don't clean out your stores, I fail to see the issue. I have seen no actual evidence of stores being cleaned out by cottagers, rumours abound..but evidence? I've seen none.

Locally,
From food to fun: Supports for Durham seniors still up and running. If you are, or know a senior, give this a read.
