Lygenztia *466 (Numbers, numbers....anybody else tired of "numbers"?) Sunday May 3, 2020 (Ontario/up)

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 3,500,476. (Deaths: 245,038 and Recovered: 1,128,192) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:37 a.m. ET on Sunday May 3, 2020:
Canada reported 56,714 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19.

The official Province of Ontario website reported 17,119 cases (511 new) with 11,390 resolved and 1,176 deaths.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 29,656.

The Region of Durham reported 1020 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (25 new) The site also reports 12 (an increase of 1) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 6 outbreaks now having been resolved. (up from 5) Currently, there are 62 cases in Clarington.

In international news,
Russia is being ravaged by COVID-19 and efforts to bring it under control are failing. Moscow is being hit the hardest. More than 10,000 cases reported in one day. Hospital conditions there are reported to be primitive and wildly inadequate.

COVID-19 numbers have surpassed the 1,000,000 case mark in the U.S. As per the CDC website, the tally is 1,092,815. Nearly 5,000 people died in the past two days in the U.S.

From the "Let's hope this isn't a disaster" file, many U.S. states are set to re-open this week. The economy must re-start, I get that. It's just scary to think that many people are going to be guinea pigs to see what happens. I guess, at this point, everything needs to be considered.

In national news,
The Cargill meat processing plant in Alberta has re-opened but is a lightning rod for workers that are afraid to return to work. The Labour Relations Board is set to hear the issue.

Northern Saskatchewan is seeing outbreaks of COVID-19, at least 80 cases. It is reported that locals are not practicing social distancing and other guidelines and are lying to get through check points. By contrast, New Brunswick has reported "zero" active COVID-19 cases and no new cases have been reported for two weeks.

Manitoba is set to re-open many businesses and services, tomorrow. They have been relatively un-affected by COVID-19, in comparison to other provinces.

From the "They have been forgotten" file, more than 300 Canadian crew members still stranded at sea aboard cruise ships.

In Ontario,
A fourth health-care worker died of COVID-19 in Ontario, and a labour union calls for better protection. The Services Employees International Union Healthcare (SEIU) identified the woman who died as 59-year-old Sharon Roberts who worked at Downsview Long Term Care in North York for 24 years. PPE's are being re-used by PSW's and in some cases, in our hospitals.

Anti-lockdown protest yesterday at Queen's Park on the legislature grounds. While I share the protesters frustration, the defiling of the Canadian flag is unacceptable and makes absolutely no sense. Shame on those that did such a silly thing.

Locally,
The weather is expected to be beautiful today, with the daily high reported to be 21 degrees. We plan to go for an ATV ride today, which does not present any issues with regards to social distancing.

More than 1,600 calls were made to DRPS to report emergency order violations, 12 charges were laid. Which leads me to my close, people are getting tired of this and are becoming increasingly frustrated. Everyone that I speak to has "had enough." Some are giving up on social distancing and while we need to keep up the fight, I get it. There are so many mixed messages in the media, people aren't always sure just what to believe.

It will be interesting to see what this summer looks like. Basically, every indoor/outdoor event in Ontario has been cancelled. Think about that; no concerts, no jamborees, no flea markets, no summer camps for kids, no swimming lessons, no fairs, no ribfest, no sports for kids, or tournaments, no community events, no horse-shoe tournaments, no food truck events, no outdoor theatre, no craft beer festivals, no regatta's, no car rally's, no film festival's, no family reunions, no fishing tournaments, no large weddings no fireworks....the list goes on and on. It truly boggles the mind. I found a website "The Ontario Summer Fun guide", which lists events that would have happened. To wrap your mind around the cancellations, give it a quick look.
