Lygenztia *471 (Recession, or depression?) Friday May 8, 2020 (Ontario/up)

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 3,933,097 (96,278 new). (Deaths: 271,031 and Recovered: 1,349,822) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place. By the time I am done writing today, i'm guessing the world will pass the 4 million case mark.

As of 6:31 a.m. ET on Friday May 8, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 64,911 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (1,426 new)

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 18,722 total confirmed cases (412 new) and 1,429 deaths. (63 new) Currently, 1,033 people are in hospital (1 new) with 220 in ICU.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 35,328 (1,001 new).

The Region of Durham reported 1,132 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (21 new) The site also reports 15 current outbreaks (1 new) at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 6 of the outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, there are 72 (1 new) cases in Clarington. Interestingly, the Region of Durham changed formatting and wording, today. "Resolved" in LTCF's etc. changed to "Concluded" and there are various other wording changes. Not suggesting anything nefarious, just mentioning some significant changes in their website format.

In international news,
The U.S. is still crazy. Nothing new in that regard.

From the "How the f**k does that happen?" file, New York Governor Cuomo says it’s ‘shocking’ most new coronavirus hospitalizations are people who had been staying home.

From the Epoch Times, a must read. Pandemic Prompts World to ‘Wake Up’ to Threats Posed by Communist China: Pompeo

In national news,
From the "HOLY F**K" file, Canada lost 2 million jobs in April as national unemployment rate soars to 13 per cent.

I really like this feature in CTV news. It's daily and called "5 things to know today". Check it out.

You deserve a raise': PM says deal reached to top up wages for essential COVID-19 workers. I hate it, but this is backfiring and causing resentment and a "what about me" sentiment. There are many, many people worthy of a raise......who is to say which are most deserving? I don't have the answer.

From the "Stock up" file, the COVID-19 Pandemic is causing 'unprecedented' threat to beef and pork producers.

This story really bothers me. I don't use Greyhound, but there is a very significant undertone to this. Greyhound Canada temporarily shuts down, routes suspended starting Tuesday. Greyhound Canada says their ridership has plummeted by a whopping 95 per cent due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so they’re shutting down for the time being. Think about this for a second, buses are no longer traversing our beautiful country taking people to jobs and to see loved ones. This is truly sad.

In Ontario,
Yesterday, Ontario recorded a dip in COVID-19 cases, marking the third day this week with fewer than 400 new patients.

I sometimes wonder how many victims COVID-19 is going to claim from other complications. The province planning to resume surgeries as patient the backlog continues to grow. They are not telling us the backlog numbers, but it is estimated to be in the "tens of thousands." That, in and of itself is scary. Not to mention, people that are currently sick that are terrified to go to hospital. And, make no mistake, they are out there folks. Personally, I would only go to hospital if one of my limbs was torn off. Other than that, big nopes.

Ontario premier says cottagers now being asked to 'hold off' from going to their properties for Victoria Day. Sorry, Mr. Ford but it is not going to happen. People (including myself) have worked hard, paid their taxes and bought a place to reward themselves and their families. Local businesses are clamoring for the business. "The mayors have also said that the relatively low number of intensive care unit beds in their largely rural communities would make widespread transmission of the virus potentially devastating." Ok, that's fair..so if you are a cottager and you feel unwell, go home. Simple. Don't go into town. Simple. Take stuff with you. Simple.

If you can't social isolate at a cottage, then where in the Hell can you?

Two more PSW's have died in Ontario. I do not have more detail at this time, I just heard the story on Kx96.

Locally,
From the SHOP LOCAL file, here is an excellent article on how to (safely) get local fruits and veggies in Oshawa, Whitby and Clarington this spring. The concept is simple — producers advertise their goods in the Bowmanville Reko Network Facebook group and customers pre-order what they want online. Products are then exchanged at a set time and location in the community. The Bowmanville network will have its first delivery on May 14 from 5:45 to 6:45 p.m. in the parking lot of the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex.

This very mis-leading article pissed me off this morning. I would even call it irresponsible. "Three coronavirus outbreaks at Durham hospitals
Eleven outbreaks at long-term care facilities in Durham
"

First off, the "outbreaks" at Durham Hospitals were reported back in April. The article title suggests they are "new" so that you will read it. They are not "new", they are ongoing and have been reported on previously. Secondly, this detail is buried in the 7th paragraph of thee article. Stop scaring people because you are working from home and have nothing to report on.
