Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 4,859,342 (Deaths: 318,530 and Recovered: 1,888,169) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place. If I had to guess, i'd say the actual number of cases is 10 times that which is being reported.

As of 2:57 p.m. ET on Monday May 18, 2020:

In international news,
NASCAR's Darlington race crushed it with over 6 million viewers. That’s up 38 percent from the last NASCAR race in Phoenix on March 8, before the series took a 10-week hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and makes it the most-watched sports event in the U.S. since the Daytona 500 in February.

Suitcases full of cash are being offered at PPE factories in China, which is affecting the global supply. Ron Pecchioli founded Ronco, an Ontario-based company with PPE manufacturing facilities overseas in China and Malaysia. He says staff there reported seeing people from various countries standing outside the facilities with briefcases full of cash to bid for available PPE. "The loyalty of the companies in China doesn't exist anymore," said Pecchioli. "Since COVID-19 started … in order to speed up and prioritize [orders], people arrived with cash, or cash arrived to China, allowing them to do the auction purchasing."

In national news,
The Snowbirds CAF member killed in plane crash in Kamloops, B.C. has been identified as Captain Jenn Casey, a public affairs officer with the Canadian Forces. Capt. Richard MacDougall, the pilot of the aircraft, was being treated for his injuries that the Snowbirds said are not life-threatening.

Quebec reported 34 new COVID-19 deaths, the fewest since April 12th.

A Halifax lab team is set to conduct the first Canadian trials for a possible COVID-19 vaccine. Health Canada has approved trials that will be conducted at the Canadian Centre for Vaccinology at Dalhousie University.

In Ontario,
Ontario shops and stores will need to make big changes in order to reopen to public tomorrow. They need to ensure that they redo or redesign the interior of their store to respect the one person per four square metres. Many store owners have installed Plexiglas in front of their cash areas and customer service counters.

In local news,
We did not get pounded with the wicked rain they were calling for.

Other than that, nothing, really.
