Lygenztia *489 (Why you no tell us??) Tuesday May 26, 2020

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 5,607,726 518,661. (89,065 new-) (Deaths: 348,256 and Recovered: 2,384,589) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:01 a.m. ET on Tuesday May 26, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 85,700 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (1,014 new-)

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 25,904 total confirmed cases (404 new-) and 2,102 total deaths. Currently, there are 859 people are in hospital with 148 in ICU. 19,698 cases have been resolved.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 47,984. (573 new) Coincidentally, Quebec had 573 new cases yesterday as well.

The Region of Durham reported 1,382 58 confirmed cases (24 new+) of COVID-19. The site also reports 9 (none new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 19 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, there are 83 (2 new+) cases in Clarington. In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently sits at 20%, with 60% being contracted in institutional settings.

In international news,
The WHO is warning that countries could see an 'immediate second peak' if restrictions are lifted too early. In a virtual press briefing Monday, Dr. Michael Ryan of the WHO said that although cases are on their way down in many countries, the world is still “right in the middle of the first wave, globally.” The concept of a second wave of cases after the virus has been beaten down once is a major source of concern. But we haven’t suppressed the virus to a degree where a second wave is the next worry, Ryan said.

Authorities in China are underreporting CCP Virus Cases: Leaked Documents. The Jilin provincial government in northeastern China is underreporting the number of CCP virus-diagnosed patients, leaked internal documents recently obtained by The Epoch Times reveal. And on one recent occasion, the National Health Commission diluted the figures further. Chinese authorities have consistently concealed the true scale of the outbreak, leading to citizens’ distrust of official data. Jilin Province is currently experiencing a second wave outbreak of the CCP virus, which authorities said began with a “patient zero,” a cleaning worker at the police bureau of Shulan, a small municipality under the administration of Jilin city.

President Trump has booked back-to-back Memorial Day appearances despite the coronavirus pandemic, at Arlington National Cemetery and at a historic fort in Baltimore. Sigh....what do you even say, anymore?

From the "Every now and then" file, millions of cicadas are expected to emerge after 17 years underground. As if we didn't have enough to worry about with giant murder hornets invading the U.S. and a global pandemic, millions of 17-year cicadas will emerge from the ground this year. As many as 1.5 million cicadas per acre may emerge, and people living in Southwest Virginia, parts of North Carolina and West Virginia could witness this unique phenomenon.Luckily, cicadas are harmless to humans.

Want to be James Bond? Move to Italy. The Italian government announced it is recruiting 60,000 volunteer “civic assistants” as informants to report on anyone violating norms concerning the use of masks and social distancing. The government is recruiting unemployed citizens, especially those who receive social security or unemployment income, as an extension of its uniformed security services during the second phase of the coronavirus lockdown, Italian media reported. The plainclothes informants have received instructions to watch for abuses of state-mandated safety norms and to report on violators.

In national news,
I'm sure that Justin gave more money away yesterday and will again, today. Get in line, folks! I'm not sure what scares me more, Justin's current minority government or an election where he wins a majority from all the votes he has purchased?

I wonder, are people actually still watching his daily baffle-gab, drama infused finger wagging "update" sessions?

Ontario happenings,
Yesterday, Premier Ford and Health Minister Elliott told us about COVID-19 "hotspots" in Ontario. The problem is, they will not tell us where the "hotspots" are? I say we have a right to know. Their reasoing is those communities will be stigmatized and the non-hotspots will have a false sense of security. I could not disagree more; if an area/community is a "hotspot", I feel I have the right to know and so does the rest of Ontario.

From the "It's nap time, kids" file, the City of Toronto plans to paint circles on the ground at Trinity Bellwoods Park to ensure social distancing. Really? They think that if they paint circles on the ground, people will immediately "obey" based on the order of an inanimate line of paint? Laughable.....

Blame your mama! Mother’s Day gatherings contrary to physical distancing rules helped boost Ontario’s COVID-19 cases and likely cause the recent spike in cases, the health minister said.

Locally,
Lakeridge Health says all you need to get tested for COVID-19 is an appointment.
Dr. Joel Kennedy, who helps run the Lakeridge Health Assessment Centre says they only have one requirement. “We are an appointment-only centre at this point,” explained Kennedy. “And that’s to manage distancing, as well as timing and swabs and line-ups.

From the "stabby, stabby" file, Oshawa drug deal leads to (yet another) stabbing. The victim told the officers he had been stabbed and hit with a golf club Saturday in a Simcoe Street apartment building during a failed drug transaction. They are now looking for two suspects, a man described as black, about 30-40 years old and a woman described as Latin-American and about 30 years old.

Musing,
For yet another year, in 2020 we went straight from Winter to Summer. I think it would be cool if we could go from Autumn to Summer. A few days ago, I mused about the unlikeliness of hand sanitizer "bursting" into flames in a hot vehicle. Today, on CP24 Cam Wooley also debunked the theory and told us it is not possible unless the interior temperature of the vehicle exceeds 500 degrees. Which can only happen, if the vehicle is already on fire. This original theory was brought to us by a group of doctors folks, which just goes to show you.....just because an expert said so, doesn't make it automatically true.
