Lygenztia *491 (Meet the new Boss.........) Thursday May 28, 2020

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 5,813,302. (109,129 new+) (Deaths: 357,896 and Recovered: 2,515,413) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:01 a.m. ET on Thursday May 28, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 87,508 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (872 new-)

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 26,483 total confirmed cases (292 new+) and 2,155 total deaths. Currently, there are 847 people are in hospital with 150 in ICU. 20,372 cases have been resolved.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 49,139. (541 new-)

The Region of Durham reported 1,404 confirmed cases (5 new-) of COVID-19. The site also reports 9 (none new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 22 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, there are 85 (1 new+) cases in Clarington. In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently sits at 20%, with 60% being contracted in institutional settings.

In international news,
From the "Just how scary can this world get?" file, Trump is set to sign an executive order on social media Thursday, White House says. Officials gave no further details. It was unclear how Trump could follow through on the threat of shutting down privately owned companies including Twitter.

In national news,
A full half of Canadians are not sure if governments are telling the truth about COVID-19. A new study by Leger and the Association for Canadian Studies found 50-percent of those surveyed felt governments are withholding information about the virus. The poll also shows that a third believe the virus was created in a lab or by the Chinese government. 19-percent think the number of deaths is exaggerated and 16-percent think the virus was created to make the vaccine mandatory.

From the "Shit fight with China" file, China refuses to believe Canada's legal system is independent. The decision released Wednesday in the Meng Wanzhou extradition case had the usual hallmarks of a Canadian judicial ruling: a bone-dry analysis of the law, the facts and how one should be applied to the other. There were allusions to an 1860 Upper Canada case and a U.K. House of Lords judgment. As usual, it contained no hint of political interference. But 8,500 kilometres away in Beijing, the ruling was likely to be viewed in much different term — terms that could help dictate how China responds, experts say. We must never forget that China is currently holding 2 Canadians (for all intents and purposes) "hostage" in this whole affair. Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig. No consular official has been allowed to see them and their condition is unknown.

From the "Don't do what Donny don't does" file, yet again Dr. Tam has mixed the messaging and confused Canadians. Canada’s top doctor says wearing a mask outdoors is a problem during high heat and humidity. This could be especially dangerous for seniors, infants and young children, or people with chronic illnesses. Dr. Tam adds that people who work outdoors, are from low-income households or are homeless are also at a higher risk of heat-related illnesses. But make sure you take her advice on all the other stuff? No...wait.

In Ontario,

Not surprisingly, Ontario is taking over management of five long-term care homes following a scathing military report. Four of the five privately-owned homes-- Orchard Villa in Pickering, Altamount Care Community in Scarborough, Eatonville Care Centre in Etobicoke, Hawthorne Place in North York--were the subject of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) report that was released on Tuesday and made severe claims in terms of cleanliness, aggressive behavior of staff and general care of patients.

This modelling shows what could happen if Ontario relaxes physical distancing too quickly. It ain't pretty.

Dentists, optometrists and massage therapists are among several dozen providers who can start to take clients immediately. Chiropractors, physiotherapists, psychologists, dieticians, denturists, and midwives are also included on the list. The province says the reopening of the clinics must be done in compliance with the respective regulatory colleges that oversee the providers.

The City of Toronto (where the vast majority of Ontario's cases are) released a map showing geographic information on COVID-19 cases and the affected neighbourhoods. To see the map, click here.

From the "I can't decide if this bugs me, or not" file, a petition is calling for the government to cover 100 per cent of rent for businesses that can’t operate. I am not "anti-business", quite the opposite. That said, for the most part business wants no government interference, think they can do it better than government and only see government/regulation as a hindrance. (anecdotal, of course..but most businesses would agree with this sentiment, if truthful) But when they need help, they look to "the government." To me, you can't suck and blow at the same time. You're in..or you're out and to me; that means accepting that government regulation of business, is a cost of doing business.

Local news/sportsdesk,
From the "It's local to me" file, Bancroft BIA “soft launches” their online marketplace. Kurtis Grant with the BBIA explains the website – Discover Bancroft – will allow businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to sell their services online. Each business will set-up a profile with general information about them and will be categorized appropriately. Grant says payment is being done through Stripe. He adds that businesses will have to set-up an account through the payment processor. “The payments will go through our Stripe accounts to theirs without any payments being withheld,” he says. Hello...??? Bancroft Brewing?

Durham police say a man is seriously hurt after he was launched from his motorcycle when it struck a curb in Bowmanville. It happened around 10:30 p.m. on Mearns Avenue, close to Concession Street East. Police say the 30-year-old rider was thrown from his bike into a nearby pole. He was rushed to Sunnybrook Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Only the bike was involved.

From the "Ah, yes. Oshawa" file, Durham police are searching for a man who was seen fleeing the area after some early morning gunfire in Oshawa. Officers were called around 7:20 a.m. Wednesday about a single shot fired into a home near Cedar Street and Stone Street, right along the lakefront

Musing,
As the heatwave continues, I remind myself that two weeks ago (today) I drove through a blinding snowstorm in Gooderham. R.I.P. = Spring
