Lygenztia * 492 (Minneapolis burning.......) Friday May 29, 2020
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 5,931,632. (118,330 new+) (Deaths: 362,610 and Recovered: 2,595,914) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:01 a.m. ET on Friday May 29, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 88,501 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (1,007 new+)

In international news,
Things in Minneapolis are looking grim. Protesters set fire to a police station in the wake of George Floyd’s death. It’s the precinct where four officers worked before they were fired in the wake of George Floyd’s controversial death. Floyd, a black man, died Monday after a white police officer kneeled on his neck for about eight minutes during his arrest. That officer and three others involved in the incident were fired Tuesday and an investigation has begun. Protesters are calling on the officer(s) to be charged. Since Tuesday, protests and looting have been growing in violence. On Friday morning, National Guard members were stationed around the city to stem looting.
A CNN crew was arrested while live on the air while reporting from Minneapolis. They were later released.
++UPDATE++ (2:47 p.m.)
The Minneapolis cop who knelt on handcuffed George Floyd charged with murder.
The Minneapolis police officer who was seen on video kneeling on the neck of George Floyd, a handcuffed black man who died in custody after pleading that he could not breathe, was arrested Friday and charged with murder. Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman said Derek Chauvin was charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter, after the office gathered enough evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Freeman did not have immediate details, but said a criminal complaint would be made available later. The charges come after three days of protests, which had been escalating in violence.
In national news,
From New Brunswick, 3 more Campbellton COVID-19 cases have been linked to a doctor who didn't self-isolate. Until last week, New Brunswick had no active cases of COVID-19 and all 120 people infected since the pandemic began in March had recovered. Russell said health officials don't yet know the extent of the outbreak because they're still contact tracing, but she hopes they will be able to "turn the tide" with tighter restrictions and widespread testing. RCMP are investigating to determine whether charges are warranted. My guess? Probably not gonna happen.
From the "CBC's undying love and unquestioned affection for Justin" file, why the PM's daily briefings have worked — and why we might see fewer of them soon. Whatever.....
Some good news from Dr. Tam (Anyway, I think it is, because it will likely change tomorrow) Dr. Tam says curve flattened but outbreaks in vulnerable settings worrisome.
In Ontario,
The Ontario Health Coalition is one of dozens of groups that are calling on the Ford government to ensure any inquiry into the state of long-term care (LTC) homes is open, public and transparent. In a joint open letter to the provincial government, the groups say a “full public commission or inquiry into the province’s overall response to COVID-19” is critical to preventing similar outbreaks in the future. They’re also asking for any public inquiry into LTC homes be independent and unbiased.
From the "Yea, this will help" file, The City of Toronto says they’re going to finish painting social distancing circles in Trinity Bellwoods Park by Monday. A spokeswoman says workers began painting the circles on Thursday, but by the afternoon, they had to stop due to heavy rain. More rain is anticipated Friday, so the city plans to finish the work Monday. The circles are about eight feet in diameter and 10 feet apart. Each circle is big enough for two adults laying down or three adults sitting cross-legged.
Local/sportsdesk happenings,
Some Durham transit routes temporarily suspended due to impact of coronavirus. Ridership has been consistently at approximately 25 per cent of budgeted levels since mid-March. Based on demand, the DRT implemented a system-wide service change on March 23 — an Enhanced Saturday schedule (a Saturday schedule 7 days/week with enhancements on the routes which required it).
The NBA plans is targeting a return on July 31st.
Musing,
Going to rain this weekend, may as well sit in and have a beer. That's new, right?
