Lygenztia *493 (The good ole hockey game?.....Nopes) Saturday May 30, 2020

The world has now surpassed the 6 million case mark.
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 6,052,421. (120,789 new+) (Deaths: 367,288 and Recovered: 2,675,408) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 7:01 a.m. ET on Saturday May 30, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 89,407 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (906 new-)

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 27,210 total confirmed cases (344 new-) and 2,230 total deaths. Currently, there are 826 people are in hospital with 121 in ICU. 20,983 cases have been resolved.

Quebec broke the 50,000 mark and continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 50,232. (530 new-)

When you look at the numbers, they are fascinating. Almost all of the new cases in Canada every day come from Ontario and Quebec. Yesterday Canada reported 906 new cases and of that 874 came from Ontario and Quebec. So, in all of Canada only 32 new cases were reported in every other province and territory. Think of the sheer size of our great nation and let that sink in, 32 cases. Canada's estimated population is 37.59 million; Ontario is 14.5 million and Quebec is 8.2 million; which leaves approximately 14.5 million people. So, you're chances of contracting COVID-19 anywhere other than Quebec or Ontario are (give or take) about 1 in 14.5 million? Possibly even less....I suck at math.

The Region of Durham reported 1,435 confirmed cases (11 new-) of COVID-19. The site also reports 9 (none new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 22 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington remains at 85 cases, where we have sat for the last 3 days. In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently sits at 20%, with 60% being contracted in institutional settings.

In international news,
The George Floyd protests have spread nationwide in the U.S.A. Demonstrators marched, stopped traffic and in some cases lashed out violently at police as protests erupted Friday in dozens of U.S. cities following the killing of George Floyd after a white officer pressed a knee into his neck while taking him into custody in Minnesota. In Phoenix, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and beyond, thousands of protesters carried signs that said: "He said I can't breathe. Justice for George." They chanted "No justice, no peace" and "Say his name. George Floyd." After hours of peaceful protest in downtown Atlanta, some demonstrators suddenly turned violent, smashing police cars, setting one on fire, spray-painting the iconic logo sign at CNN headquarters, and breaking into a restaurant. The crowd pelted officers with bottles, chanting "Quit your jobs."

My heart is breaking for our American friends. Never before have they been so divided and never before has their need for strong leadership been so apparent.

From the "Paradox" file, COVID-19 IN PUERTO VALLARTA IS WORSE THAN THE DAILY NUMBERS REVEAL and the next article (you can't make this stuff up) is PUERTO VALLARTA WILL BEGIN OPENING ON MONDAY; NO BEACHES, NO HOTEL POOLS, NO BARS.

From the "Who would have thought those vikings could be so catty?" file, Norway and Denmark dropped mutual border controls, but exclude Sweden. Their scandinavian neighbour was barred for now, because of their higher coronavirus death toll. Swedish Chef (for those that would recall him from the Muppet Show) was asked for comment. in response he stated "Bork, bork, bork. Uskin beefkin, phoosy beesin". I must say, he nailed it and for once.... I agree with him.

In national news,
A newly released document reveals that in May 2011, police were told the Nova Scotia man who would later kill 22 people in a shooting rampage wanted to “kill a cop” and was feeling mentally unstable. The officer safety bulletin, submitted by the Truro Police Service, does not include names in the version released to media, but police Chief David MacNeil confirmed Friday the subject in question was Gabriel Wortman. The brief report says a Truro police officer had received information from a source indicating Wortman was upset about a police investigation into a break-and-enter and had “stated he wants to kill a cop.

Justin bought more votes. Oooops, I meant, he gave more money away yesterday and repeatedly apologized to somebody, about something. (again) I have always wondered what other world leaders say about him? "Oh, Justin? Yes, he tries to be like his father but he's kind of a big cry-baby."

Quebec says 41 students and staff have tested positive for COVID-19 since reopening. A survey of school boards conducted May 25 found that 19 students and 22 staff members were found to be infected in the first two weeks following the reopening. The highest numbers of cases were in school boards in the Laurentians and Monteregie regions north and southeast of Montreal, with 10 cases each.

In Ontario,
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said he's considering a regional, phased approach to reopening the province amid the COVID-19 pandemic — an option he had previously resisted. Ford said the province's expanded testing guidelines, released this morning, will help public health officials better understand trends and hot spots. "Now that our testing is getting to where we need it, I am now comfortable with asking our officials to look at a regional approach for a staged reopening."

Yesterday, COVID-19 Ontario results came back from more than 18,000 people who had been tested and the results showed a 2% infection rate.

A rally is set to take place in Toronto today in protest of what organizers describe as anti-black and anti-Indigenous racism around the world. The protest, organized by a group dubbed Not Another Black Life, comes on the heels of high-profile, police-involved deaths in both Canada and the United States. My prediction......it will be emotional, but peaceful.

Local/sportsdesk happenings,

What's up locally? Not a whole lot, which is very typical as of late.

An outbreak of COVID-19 at Lakeridge Health Ajax-Pickering has impacted three patients, including one who has died, and four staff members. On May 25, an outbreak of COVID-19 was confirmed on 2West, an inpatient medicine unit at the Ajax-Pickering hospital. Lakeridge spokesperson Sharon Navarro said via e-mail that four staff members and one patient have tested positive for COVID-19 in the unit. The staff members are currently in isolation at their homes while the patient remains in hospital.

From the "Good to know" file, the Whitby fire chief urges the safe use, handling of propane cylinders after man burned and provided dos and don'ts for avoiding dangerous accidents with the cylinders. So, let me get this straight...you are telling me that propane cylinders are highly flammable, potentially dangerous and should not be stored under my bed? Ah, I see...never would have guessed.

Musing,
The NHL is planning its return to the playoff season, soon. How will it work? Well, it won't. It's a full contact sport with sweaty players crashing into eachother, spitting water from water bottles, face washing opponents with their (sweaty) gloves, getting into scrums, sometimes fighting. All it will take is one single case and that team (and its most recent opponent) are out. Now, how do the playoffs proceed? Would I like to see hockey again? Of course, but at this point why not just wait till next season and re-start "normally".

And another thing....Justin is not going to allow cruise ships in Canadian waters until (at least) November. BUT, he will allow passenger ships with less than 100 occupants to cruise, party and set sail. Is it just me, or is this so he (and his rich buddies) can still enjoy their yachts this summer while us commoners are scolded for not social distancing?
