Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 6,474,124. (85,807 new- and significantly down) (Deaths: 382,914 and Recovered: 3,083,621) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:50 a.m. ET on Wednesday June 3, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 92,399 confirmed cases of COVID-19. (705 new+) A full 64% of the new confirmed cases come from Ontario.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 28,709 total confirmed cases (446 new+) and 2,293 total deaths. Currently, there are 801 people are in hospital with 125 in ICU. 22,484 cases have been resolved. For the second straight day, Ontario health officials are reporting more than 400 cases of the novel coronavirus after a week of cases below that number. Health officials confirmed an additional 446 cases on Tuesday, as well as 17 more deaths, including two people under the age of 39. The province had reported an additional 404 cases of the disease on Monday, which was the first time the tally had climbed past 400 after a week of case numbers in the 300s.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 51,593. (239 new-)
The Region of Durham reported 1,489 confirmed cases (17 new+) of COVID-19. The site also reports 9 (none new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 23 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington is at 86 cases. (1 new). In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently sits at 20%, with 60% being contracted in institutional settings.
In international news,
Last night, more than 20,000 National Guard soldiers and airmen were activated in 28 states as protests continue across the U.S.A. In New York, Gov. Andrew Cuomo blamed New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio for refusing to accept help from the National Guard.
Are the protests losing steam, or are they just resting up for more? Protests in the U.S. were largely peaceful and the nation's streets were calmer than they have been in days since the killing of George Floyd set off demonstrations that at times brought violence and destruction. There were scattered reports of looting in New York City overnight, and as of Wednesday morning there had been over 9,000 arrests nationwide since the unrest began. But there was a marked quiet last night, compared with the unrest of the past few nights.
Border restrictions are beginning to be relaxed across Europe. Plans to relax coronavirus border restrictions are being drawn up across Europe, with EU officials pushing for countries to again facilitate the free movement of people and goods – despite concerns of a second wave of infection. The European Commission issued guidance on Wednesday urging member states with a “similar overall risk profile” to replace “blanket restrictions” on free movement with “more targeted measures”.
In Mexico, a U.S. model estimates that the peak of the epidemic will be on July 25 in Mexico, with 3.4 million active carriers, while the highest number of deaths will be on August 6, with an estimated 1,934 deaths.
Remember the horror in Italy? One of the hardest hit countries in the entire world. Now, Coronavirus 'no longer clinically exists in Italy', a top doctor says. A study conducted at a hospital in Milan found that the number of viruses present in people who tested positive has decreased. Dr Alberto Zangrillo, the head of Milan's San Raffaele Hospital in the hard-hit Lombardy region, said the new coronavirus has become much less lethal, with newly infected patients having weaker symptoms than a couple of months ago.
In national news,
22 seconds. He paused for 22 seconds for a question that he had to know was coming. Let us not forget that prior to becoming Prime Minister, he was a drama teacher. Dramatic pause, or did he not have any answer to the question? You decide.
From the "It's about time" file, The CRA snitch line is now open to report fraudulent CERB claims. But, they have already told us there is currently no enforcement, or investigations. “If you suspect a potential misuse of the COVID-19 emergency benefits and programs, the National Leads Centre is currently accepting leads on these programs,” the agency’s website now reads.
You can submit a report on-line (through the CRA website), by phone, mail or...fax? People still use fax(es)?

Looks like COVID-19 is back in New Brunswick, just when they had no cases. All because of one person. Another resident of Manoir de la Vallee, a long-term care home in Atholville, N.B., has tested positive for COVID-19. New Brunswick public health said Tuesday that the person is in their 80s. The new case increases the number of active cases to 13 – all of them stemming from a doctor who travelled to Quebec for personal reasons and failed to self-isolate upon his return. Five of the 13 new cases are residents at Manoir de la Vallee. The number of confirmed cases in New Brunswick is 133, but 120 had recovered before the Campbellton cluster emerged.
From the "How did he get there" file, I thought (and reported) borders were closed to travel and you could not enter New Brunswick unless on essential travel. Not so for Stephen Wright, a city councillor in Peterborough, Ont., says he arrived in New Brunswick in mid-April and stayed for 11 days. New Brunswick’s borders are closed to non-essential travel, and under the the state of emergency, people who do enter are required to self-isolate for 14 days. How do you self-isolate for 14 days, when you visited for 11? Look, whether you agree with the restrictions or not, this is just another classic example of our elected leaders not "leading by example". I wonder if he has relatives and/or friends in New Brunswick? And, just how did he get into the province?
In Ontario,
Pearson airport has implemented new COVID-19 policies; everyone is now required to wear masks. Well, sort of...but not really. There are some exceptions to the mandatory mask policy. You may remove your mask when eating or drinking and children under two, people who have trouble breathing or are unable to remove a mask without help don’t have to wear one. So, you must wear a mask, unless you can't, or if you need to take it off to eat some chips..oh, and your small child is fine. No worries there.
Cause for concern, Ontario cases are spiking. Again. The daily number of COVID-19 cases in Ontario may be higher because of previously unreported cases. On Tuesday, Health Minister Christine Elliott said about 700 positive cases were not reported to public health units. The cases, some that date back as far as April, mainly involve people in Toronto, Peel Region and York Region. Many of the cases have now been added to the province’s public health database. Hundreds more of these cases will be added in the coming days. So, does anybody really know what the numbers are in Ontario? My opinion is.....no.
The province’s emergency orders to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic could potentially violate people’s privacy. That’s according to advocates and legal experts, who are raising concerns about the orders, which are currently in effect until June 9, but will likely be extended past that. The orders let first responders see people’s personal health details if they’ve tested positive for the virus. The PCs say first responders need to be able to see the information in order to protect themselves against COVID-19 while doing their jobs throughout communities. A group of advocates and public health workers are pointing out the orders are too broad and are a signficant privacy infringement.
So, what's the big deal you ask? It was reported (incorrectly) that Minnesota Police were using health authority contact tracing data on arrested persons to locate co-conspirators. And, if they did (which they didn't) would you consider that the thin edge of the privacy wedge, or a legitimate tactic? Personally, I am not a big fan of the "if you have nothing to hide, you shouldn't worry about it" stance.
Pretty cool light show from last night's thunderstorms in Toronto. Video can be seen here.
Local/sportsdesk happenings,
Have your say on the future of Clarington’s Brookhill neighbourhood. The Brookhill neighbourhood is a large space east of Maple Grove Road, between Highway 2 and Nash Road. It is roughly bordered by the Bowmanville Creek to the east. To have your say, simply fill out an online survey by Friday.
Speed cameras are up in Durham, but no fines will be issued until September. “As part of Durham Vision Zero’s goal to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on our roadways, we know that reducing speeds is the best way to decrease the frequency and severity of collisions,” said Ramesh Jagannathan, Director of Transportation and Field Services for Durham. “Automated speed enforcement has proven to be an effective way to get drivers to slow down. While the cameras are only in data collection mode at this time, drivers should always remember the need to follow posted speed limits for the safety of our community.”
An old bank building is getting a major facelift and will soon reopen as downtown Oshawa’s first indoor farmer’s market. The former Royal Bank building at the corner of Simcoe Street North and Bond Street West, is being retrofitted to house a year-round farmer's market as well as entertainment space, a cafĂ© and a brewery. Its set to open in the fall, depending on the COVID-19 situation.
Musing,
I wonder, what will it take for the U.S. protests to stop? I get the goal, I understand the issues and I agree with the protesters. But..what concrete steps will need to be put in place to satisfy people and restore trust? Where do the authorities and public even start?
Our Swoop credit now shows up on our account! Our March trip to Mexico was cancelled and after extensive efforts by my better half, we have a credit on file. Love Swoop and love Puerto Vallarta. Can't wait to go back.
CP24 reported (again) that Premier Ford is set to make an announcement at Queen's Park today. Here's a tip, city-panic. He makes an announcement everyday, at Queen's Park.
