Lygenztia *502 (To mask, or not to mask..that is the question) Wednesday June 10, 2020
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 7,343,977 (125,205 new and a significant increase). (Deaths: 414,129 and Recovered: 3,621,446) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:34 a.m. ET on Wednesday June 10, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 96,636 (408 new) confirmed cases of COVID-19.

From Vice News, Ventilator Makers Are Restricting Access to Repair Manuals in a ‘Pure Profit Play’. Repair people trying keep these machines online for COVID-19 patients shouldn't have to beg the manufacturers for the manuals. This is a story of greed, that will make you angry.
Also from Vice news, HBO Max Just Removed ‘Gone With The Wind’ For Being Too Racist. The 1939 classic film's "racist depictions were wrong then and are wrong today," an HBO Max spokesperson said. I suspect other networks/content carriers will follow suit.
From the "insidious creep towards a totalitarian world wide regime" file, the Justice Department has charged a former chair of Harvard University's Chemistry Department with making false statements about money he received from the Chinese regime. The professor, who allegedly was part of China's Thousand Talents Program, received $50,000 per month from the Wuhan University of Technology as a “strategic scientist."
In national news,
Dr. Theresa Tam said depending on which population is being studied asymptomatic people can represent a significant proportion of cases. She highlights that some of these cases are in fact mildly symptomatic or what officials call pre-symptomatic as well. But according to Tam, there are studies that have shown that transmissions from asymptomatic people can happen.
She says one thing that has come to light is that asymptomatic people appear to have the same amount of virus in the back of the nose as those who are symptomatic. Tam says this revelation together with some of the information to date on transmission potential is why Health Canada has evolved its policies to take into account that exact possibility. Wonder if she is right this time? Her batting record so far ain't great folks.
The Canada - U.S. Border is set to stay closed until (at least) late July. It prohibits non-essential travel, but allows trade and essential workers to cross.
Alberta will move to Stage 2 of relaunch on Friday, their premier says.

Winnipeg police make first ever seizure of 'ghost guns' in the city. A 31-year-old has been arrested by Winnipeg police after officers seized 28 guns including some restricted weapons and 3D printed versions of weapon parts that can't be purchased. What is a Ghost Gun? Click here. I can't figure out how this could have happened, didn't justin make these guns illegal?
In Ontario,
Well, ain't that rich? The mayors of Haldimand and Norfolk and sat down yesterday for protest haircuts, because their jurisdictions are not moving to Stage 2. These are the same mayors that told cottage goers to stay away and threatened to fine any cottager that came to their towns and were the only mayors in Ontario that were going to set up physical check points. So, what is it that they want?
Ford said “They were the same mayors that were shouting and screaming and that is fine, God bless them but all of a sudden to do 180 like that in a couple weeks as your numbers are going up in your area. I just can’t figure it out,” ......... “They are the last two mayors in the whole province out of 444 mayors that I would think would be doing this but this pandemic does strange thing to people.”
So, much of Ontario is moving to Stage 2 and people are seeing light at the end of the tunnel. Maybe we are over all this COVID-19 nonsense? Or, are we? Look to many states south of the border that have re-opened. North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, Florida (who have fully re-opened) are all seeing massive spikes in cases....and hospitalizations. From CNN, 19 States see rising coronavirus cases and Arizona is asking its hospitals to activate emergency plans.
Here are six reminders the COVID-19 pandemic is far from over........
1) Biggest daily spike globally: On Sunday, there were more than 136,000 cases officially recorded globally.
2) New Brunswick resurgence in cases.
3) Health officials in some parts of Ontario this week said that they are seeing an increase in cases in younger people.
4) There is no vaccine.
5) Case number reporting is nowhere close to being accurate. Since April, researchers have said that a lack of testing means the number of COVID-19 cases is actually many times higher than is being reported by health officials.
6) Hasty reopening and “quarantine fatigue” could lead to an “explosive” second wave, warned Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam.
From the "How the Hell are they going to do that?" file, all child care centres in Ontario can open on June 12. The plan will require child care operators to follow strict health protocols to ensure the safety of child care staff and children. Here are the rules, oh and best of luck with the kiddies.........
>Cohorting ― putting children and staff in groups of 10 or less day over day;
>COVID-19 response plan ― all child care settings will be required to have a plan in place if a child, parent or staff member/provider is exposed to COVID-19;
>Screening ― all staff and children must be screened prior to entry to the child care setting. Anyone feeling unwell must stay home;
>Daily attendance records ― child care settings must keep daily records of all attendees in order to support contact tracing;
>Cleaning ― child care settings must be thoroughly cleaned before opening and frequently thereafter;
>No visitors ― only essential visitors are permitted entry into the child care setting;
>Implementing drop-off and pick-up protocols in a way that facilitates physical distancing.
Should we try some large gatherings? A good old fashioned outdoor concert, maybe? There was no bump in cases from the Trinity Bellwoods Park fiasco back on May 23rd. Some experts say the virus simply does not transmit from person to person in outdoors (summer) conditions. Click here for an excellent open letter in the National Post. Infectious disease experts Neil Rau, Susan Richardson, Martha Fulford and Dominik Mertz are all in support of lifting the COVID-19 lockdowns.

Musing,
Just because you are the loudest person in a conversation, doesn't mean you're right.
I love the way the ground smells after rain and believe it or not, there is name for the phenomenon; which is Petrichor. Some plants secrete oils during dry periods, and when it rains, these oils are released into the air. The second reaction that creates petrichor occurs when chemicals produced by soil-dwelling bacteria known as actinomycetes are released. These aromatic compounds combine to create the pleasant petrichor scent when rain hits the ground.
I can't wait to see what patios (in open jurisdictions) look like on Saturday, especially if it is nice outside. I plan to drive by one in Bancroft, probably not stopping but I will be looking in to see what's up.
Like pretty much every other Canadian, we planted beautiful gardens and they are starting to flower. It's a beautiful sight to wake up to vegetable plants that are flowering.
And another thing................Try finding potting soil! Good luck with that.
