Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 7,487,704 (143,727 new and yet another significant increase). (Deaths: 419,568 and Recovered: 3,801,219) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:34 a.m. ET on Thursday June 11, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 97,109 (473 new+) confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 31,341 (251 new+) total confirmed cases and 2,475 total deaths. Currently, there are 580 people are in hospital with 118 in ICU. 25,380 cases have been resolved. There are some really cool tracking charts in this article.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 53,341 (156 new+).
The Region of Durham reported 1,609 (8 new-) confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 8 (none new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 25 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington is at 94 cases (down one). In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently remains at 20%, with the rest being connected to institutional settings.
In international news,
Oh my, the election south of the border is going to be a nasty affair. The Trump campaign is demanding that CNN apologizes for a poll that shows Biden leading.
The CNN poll conducted by SSRS and released on Monday shows Trump trailing the former vice president by 14 points, 55%-41%, among registered voters. It also finds the President's approval rating at 38% -- his worst mark since January 2019, and roughly on par with approval ratings for one-term Presidents Jimmy Carter and George H.W. Bush at this point in their reelection years -- and his disapproval rating at 57%. In the letter to Zucker, the Trump campaign argued that the CNN poll is "designed to mislead American voters through a biased questionnaire and skewed sampling."
In national news,
From the "Well, it's about time!", file a 12-minute meeting. An emergency sitting of the House of Commons came to an abrupt halt within minutes Wednesday, after the government couldn’t secure the opposition support it needed to move forward with its latest COVID-19 legislation. Good. justin and his minority government have went way past their mandate during the COVID-19 pandemic and snuck in far too many liberal self-interest measures, using the Emergency Measures Act. Bring back democracy and make cry-baby answer to the people, as he should.
Since June 3rd, 190,000 Canadians have had to re-pay the CRA for CERB payments they were not supposed to receive. Today, is June 11. If they "caught" 190,000 then how many more are lying in wait? To be fair, there was some confusion amongst recipients as to whether they should collect CERB or EI. But the scammers, ugh....the scammers will never re-pay.
Mexico, anyone? Transat AT Inc. says it plans to resume flights and tour operations starting on July 23. The Montreal-based tour company that owns Air Transat says it will begin a gradual resumption of operations with plans for 23 international routes over the summer as well as some domestic operations. Vamos!
In Ontario,
Doug Ford and Christine Elliot tested for COVID-19 out of "an abundance of caution”. I hope Mr. Ford et al are okay, because Ontario needs his leadership. Besides, he is going to be our next Prime Minister.
Ontario is reporting a spike of COVID-19 cases among young adults. Video story here.
Speaking of kids, you have to sympathize with the kiddies and the child-care workers. The rules are going to be next to impossible to "enforce". (God, I shudder to use that word when referring to children.) To wit; the guidelines say that centres should avoid all toys that can’t be regularly disinfected, such as stuffed animals.
>Toys can be shared between children but they must, at a minimum, be cleaned and disinfected before they are used by another group.
>Centres will also be encouraged to plan activities that “do not involve shared objects or toys” as much possible and to avoid any singing activities indoors amid fears that it could hasten the spread of the virus.
>There are also numerous rules around food, including one stipulating that “where possible, children should practice physical distancing while eating.”
>Providers are also expected to “ensure there is no self-serve or sharing of food at meal times.”
In local happenings,
Spring started late, which pushed back the start of turtle nesting season, but according to Kelly Wallace of the Think Turtle Conservation Initiative says it’s now underway. She says nesting season normally starts mid-May and goes until mid-July, but the start was pushed back because of spring’s late start. June would normally be the peak of nesting season, but that’s now expected to happen next month.
Nasty storms last night in Bowmanville. Many people will likely be cleaning up debris and downed tree branches from their property today. Much of southern Ontario and cottage country were hit by severe thunderstorms overnight Wednesday. There are reports of multiple downed trees, especially in Clarington, along with power outages.

Musing,
Who apologizes more when they "scold" citizens for bad behaviour? Mayor John Tory or Prime Minister justin trudeau? Close call, in my estimation.
I love a good storm, like last night.
