Lygenztia *505 (Staying on topic......) Monday June 15, 2020
The world has surpassed 8 million confirmed (known) cases of COVID-19.
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 8,024,914. (Deaths: 436,218 and Recovered: 4,144,947) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:00 a.m. ET on Monday June 15, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 98,768 confirmed cases of COVID-19. It would be really cool if we don't break 100,000 but I don't think that is likely. Hope, springs eternal.
++UPDATE++ 1:07 p.m.
The province confirmed 181 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday morning, the lowest number of new cases since March 28 when 151 cases were reported.
This is the second straight day, and the third time in the past four days, in which the province recorded fewer than 200 new cases. The new cases represent a 0.6 per cent growth rate over the day prior.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 32,189 total confirmed cases and 2,519 total deaths. Currently, there are 438 people are in hospital with 103 in ICU. 26,961 cases have been resolved. There are some really cool tracking charts in this article.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 53,952. It's fascinating when you look at the Global news interactive map of Canada. Tiny New Brunswick right beside Quebec, with only 157 cases, yet on the other side of the provincial border....almost 54,000 cases. I get it, different factors..population density, blah, blah, blah. It's just interesting.
The Region of Durham reported 1,637 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 2 current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 31 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington is at 94 cases (down one).
In the world we currently live in, having an opinion can be a dangerous thing. Therefore; I will no longer publish any current events political articles, lest they be misconstrued, or interpreted as my opinion. I'll continue to cover current events COVID-19 articles and let's see where things go. Granted, sometimes COVID-19 stories can be political but if the root of the article is a COVID-19 issue, i'll roll with it.
In international news,
China's new coronavirus outbreak sees Beijing adopt 'wartime' measures as the capital region races to contain the spread. Beijing is reintroducing strict lockdown measures and rolling out mass testing after a fresh cluster of novel coronavirus cases emerged from the city's largest wholesale food market, sparking fears of a resurgence of the deadly outbreak. The Chinese capital reported 36 new Covid-19 cases on Monday, bringing the total number to 79 since a locally transmitted infection was reported on June 12 for the first time in nearly two months, according to the National Health Commission. Makes me wonder...what is really going on in China, if this is what they are "reporting?"
The U.S.A. is seeing spikes of new cases in almost half of their states. Arizona, Texas and Florida are reporting their highest case numbers yet. As of Saturday, coronavirus cases were climbing in 22 states amid reopenings. The U.S. currently has over 2,000,000 reported cases. Arizona Hospitals have been told to activate ‘Emergency Plans’ amid a Coronavirus spike.
British holidaymakers will be welcome in Spain from next week, as Spain gets set to reopen to UK tourists on June 21.
In national news,
From the "Not sure this one passes the sniff test", file a Canadian scientist sent deadly viruses to Wuhan lab months before the RCMP were asked to investigate. Documents show concerns about Ebola shipment from National Microbiology Lab, had no relation to COVID-19.
Small indoor gatherings, dining in restaurants will be allowed in most of Quebec starting June 15th. People will be allowed to gather indoors in groups of 10 or fewer as long as they continue to keep a safe distance from each other and make sure to clean surfaces. As is the case for outdoor gatherings, indoor gatherings should only include members of three households, said Dr. Richard Massé, a public health advisor with the province.
From the "Well, it's kind-of/sort-of a story" file, some researchers say COVID-19 vaccine trials are moving along faster than expected, meaning that one could emerge in months, not years. In the early days of the pandemic, many doctors and scientists said a potential vaccine could be in development for several years. Dr. Gary Kobinger, director of infectious disease research at Quebec’s Laval University says, at the moment, there are more than 100 possible vaccines in development. He says vaccines are being developed, tested and evaluated around the world, from North and South America to Africa and Europe.
In Ontario,
Is Stage 2 re-opening in the GTHA is coming? Think Ford will announce that later today? Yesterday, the province reported 197 new cases of COVID-19, a 0.6 per cent increase over the day prior. That was the seventh straight day in which the province has recorded fewer than 300 new cases of the novel coronavirus. Sunday's report also marks the second day this week where fewer than 200 new cases were reported.
In Ottawa, It's now mandatory for OC Transpo riders and workers to wear masks, under new rules that went into effect today. Ottawa is the first Canadian city to introduce such a policy during the COVID-19 pandemic, and masks will be given away for free during the first week. "We'll have 200,000 masks for the first couple of weeks, but that supply will run out quickly," said their Mayor who is encouraging people who are able to, to purchase their own.
In local happenings,
COVID-19 wise? Not much. Durham Region remains in Stage 1, for now. I strongly suspect we are going to Stage 2 on Friday. The stats bear that out. In Durham we are down to 2 institutional outbreaks, at present. The percentage of population infected (outside of that realm) is very, very low. If you don't believe me, go to their website, which I link to in the numbers update in the top section.
Musing,
Is the great shift to working from home here to stay? I sure hope so. The benefits to the environment and reduced traffic for trucks to get their goods delivered are immense to all of us. The overall benefits are too numerous to list.
I took the day off and was in a Stage 2 re-opening town on Friday. (Bancroft) It was amazing how you could just feel that things were back "alive", again. It felt normal, comforting and exciting all at the same time. Smiles were everywhere.
Looks like another heatwave is set to hit later this week. Good, i'm McLovin it.
Started reading the Bible from page 1. I'm going to start with the Old testament and then through to the New Testament. I'm not what you would call "religious", it is more that I am curious and want to read it and see what I could learn from it. Lesson 1? There is a lot of scandalous sex in the Book of Genesis.
