Lygenztia *516 (CANADA DAY) Thursday July 1, 2020
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 10,614,597. (Deaths: 514,622 and Recovered: 5,823,384) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:28 a.m. ET on Wednesday July 1, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 104,186 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 35,068 total confirmed cases and 2,672 total deaths. Currently, there are 213 people are in hospital with 42 in ICU. 30,344 cases have been resolved. There are some really cool tracking charts in this article.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 55,458.
The Region of Durham reported 1,698 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 2 current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 32 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington is steady at 95 cases, which is up 1 from last week.
In international news,
Things are still looking grim in Mexico as "PUERTO VALLARTA HOSPITAL SATURATED WITH COVID-19 PATIENTS". I would report the numbers, but there is no point. Testing and reporting in Mexico is so sparse that the reported numbers are wildly inaccurate and basically meaningless. Some regions downplay the issue, while others simply ignore it, in hopes of preserving local economies.
It looks like Spain is starting to see COVID-19 popping up again. More than 100 new cases have been reported in the Malaga region, which is famous for its beautiful beaches.
In Australia, (Breaking News) 14 new cases in NSW and restrictions for Victorian travellers; Victoria records another 73 new cases ahead of lockdown; Queensland is set to ease restrictions. Set that against authorities that are going to lockdown more than 300,000 people in suburbs north of Melbourne, for a month, in a bid to contain the risk of infection after two weeks of double-digit rises in new cases.
In national news,
Take off, eh! From National Geographic, by overwhelming margins, Canadians do not want U.S. citizens—more precisely, more COVID-19—inside their country anytime soon. And for that, they’re sorry, writes Johanna Read for National Geographic. Or perhaps not that sorry, eh? Half of all Canadians surveyed don’t even want tourists from other Canadian provinces coming around this summer. The border closure with the U.S.A. was just extended until July 31st, so forget tourism (to either country) for this summer. It is highly unlikely the border will re-open after the 31st, given the COVID-19 situation south of the border.
New national modelling on the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada shows that “hotspots” remain in Ontario and Quebec, and the percentage of younger people contracting the virus has increased in proportion to a decrease in older patients in the last month. Federal health officials are projecting that as of July 12 the country could see between 103,940 and 108,130 cases, and between 8,545 and 8,865 deaths.
From the "flying anytime soon, are we?" file, in Manitoba, health officials are warning of possible COVID-19 exposure on Air Canada flights. The new case, announced Tuesday afternoon, is a woman in her 20s from the Winnipeg health region. The province said case investigation is ongoing, and additional information will be updated when it’s confirmed by health officials.
Did COVID-19 prompt the "Boogaloo movement", or were these people just waiting for an opportunity? Support for the anti-government, pro-gun Boogaloo movement is growing in Canada. The anti-government, pro-gun movement linked to recent violence in the U.S. is gaining supporters in Canada; prompting warnings from experts over their often hateful, violent remarks against protesters, police and Ottawa's new firearms restrictions. In the U.S, Boogaloos have recently been in the spotlight, after some showed up heavily armed at anti-lockdown and Black Lives Matter demonstrations.
In Ontario,
Toronto city council approved a bylaw Tuesday that makes face coverings mandatory in indoor public spaces. Toronto’s top public health official earlier recommended that city council approve a new bylaw that will make it mandatory for residents to wear masks in all “indoor public spaces.” You can bet this one is going to catch on. GTHA mayors lobbied the province to take the same measures earlier this week (the province refused) so they are going to have to follow suit now, or else they are going to look like hypocrites.
Ontario is making it easier to enjoy nature on Canada Day. Premier Doug Ford has announced that residents will be able to enjoy free day use of all Ontario Parks on July 1st. Capacity may be limited at some of the more popular parks, so Minister of Environment, Conservation, and Parks Jeff Yurek encouraged people to arrive early, be respectful of physical distancing rules and come prepared by bringing hand sanitizer, extra water, and soap. “As we celebrate Canada’s 153rd birthday, this is our way of saying thank you to everyone in Ontario who has followed the public health advice to stop the spread of COVID-19,” said Ford.
From the "T.O. people gonna par-tay" file, a nightclub in Toronto’s Fashion District is facing charges under the province’s Emergency Act following an alleged indoor party with no physical distancing over the weekend. According to Toronto police, officers became aware that Goldie nightclub, at 619 King Street West, was operating indoors on the evening of June 26, in contravention of Ontario’s Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act (EMCPA). According to Toronto police, the club does not have an outdoor patio or seating area and was letting patrons in through the rear of the club. The club does not have a permit for outdoor service of any kind and no social distancing measures were being enforced, police said. My (unconfirmed) guess is, the place was going under anyway, so the owner said "eff it."
In local happenings,
The Municipality of Clarington says their popular summer camp programs are back, with a lot of extra health and safety measures. Online registration for in-person camps starts on July 7 at 7 a.m. The actual camps will launch at select sites on July 20. Due to strict physical distancing requirements, there will be a max of eight kids and two councillors per camp. Five of these modified camps will run every week. They’ll be at the South Courtice Arena, the Courtice Community Complex, the Bowmanville Indoor Soccer Centre and the Diane Hamre Recreation Complex. Each site will only host one group per week, except for the Diane Hamre Rec Complex, which is large enough for two groups at a time. All campers will undergo strict screening for COVID-19.
Musing,
Some mornings, I listen to the radio and some mornings.....I listen to my gardens.
The second wave is in the back of most people's minds. I'm not sure what it will look like, but I have my doubts we (Canada) will shut down like we did on our first go around. I don't think the population can take it and i'm no expert, but I know the economy can't withstand another lock-down. I think we are just going to have to learn to live with it, take precautions and hope for the best.
"You will live to see man made horrors beyond our comprehension" (Nikola Tesla) Sadly, I agree. The best days of mankind are behind us, and the worst days of mankind are just ahead of us. We are living in the final generations of prosperous, free citizens in North America. Very soon, we will owe our souls to the company store.....
People that disagree over facts are fools, people that disagree over ideas are thinkers.
