Lygenztia *524 (Mickey Mouse? You better believe it...........) Sunday July 12, 2020
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 13,020,527. (Deaths: 570,971 and Recovered: 7,572,007) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:28 p.m. ET on Sunday July 12, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 107,570 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

In international news,
Today, Florida reported the largest single-day increase in positive coronavirus cases in any one state since the beginning of the pandemic. According to state Department of Health statistics, 15,299 people tested positive, for a total of 269,811 cases. California had the previous record of daily positive cases; 11,694, four days ago. New York had 11,571 on April 15. But hey, Disney World re-opened. What could go wrong?
From Latvia, if the sources of most of the new Covid-19 infections recorded in Latvia this week prove untraceable, restrictions might have to be stepped up next week, LETA was told at the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC). As reported, seven new Covid-19 cases have been confirmed in Latvia for a second consecutive day after testing 1,773 people over the past 24 hours, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control informed today. According to information obtained by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control, two of the new coronavirus cases might be linked to the already reported transmissions in a group of acquaintances who had visited several public places in Riga, including the Aqua Luna restaurant on June 27.
COVID-19 claimed another victim. A bus driver in France died after brutal attack by passengers who refused to wear face masks. Prime Minister Jean Castex confirmed Philippe Monguillot’s death on Friday. Monguillot was hospitalized and declared brain dead after the July 5 attack at a bus stop in Bayonne, in southwest France. His 18-year-old daughter, Marie Monguillot, told Agence France-Presse that doctors and the family decided it was time “to let him go” and take him off life support. Monguillot was dragged off his No. 810 bus and violently beaten and kicked in the head after he asked four passengers to wear face masks, the Bayonne prosecutor said. Masks are required on French public transportation because of the coronavirus pandemic. Four people are in custody, authorities said.
The rate of positive results in COVID-19 tests in Puerto Vallarta continues to increase, going from 36 to 60 percent in the last three weeks. The increase in positivity rates were confirmed by the doctor, Jesús Aarón Curiel Beltrán, in charge of the COVID-19 Diagnostic Center of the University of GuaThe doctor announced the number of tests carried out in the corresponding period from last Monday to this Friday, which total 1,734, of which 1,280 correspond to PCR and 454 to the so-called “rapid tests”.
In national news,
Yes, I hack on justin. That said, credit must be given for the continued closure of the U.S./Canada border. U.S. members of Congress are pushing Canada to reopen its shared border with the United States, Canadians are pushing back — both in government and on social media. In an open letter addressed to Public Safety Minister Bill Blair, 29 bipartisan members of Congress called on the Canadian government to plan a phased reopening of the Canada-U.S. border and to consider easing existing measures. "We are asking that the United States and Canada immediately craft a comprehensive framework for phased reopening of the border based on objective metrics and accounting for the varied circumstances across border regions," read the letter, which was published on Western New York Congressman Brian Higgins' website on July 3. Every Canadian that I know does not want the border re-opened and my guess is justin is going to stick to his guns on this issue.
Class-action lawsuit alleges meat packer failed to take COVID-19 precautions. A class-action lawsuit has been filed against Cargill Ltd. that claims the meat-packing company failed to take reasonable precautions to protect its workers in Alberta during the COVID-19 pandemic. Cargill’s beef plant near High River, south of Calgary, employs about 2,200 people. It shut down for two weeks in April because of an outbreak that affected 350 staff.
In Ontario,
The province is supporting the launch of the Ontario Made program from Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters (CME). The program is to promote products made in Ontario and help customers identify them. On Friday, Premier Doug Ford said he believes given the choice between two similar products, Ontarians will choose the one made locally. Funding for Ontario Made is made possible through the $50 million Ontario Together Fund launched on April 1, 2020. This funding will be used to help retailers and consumers identify local products by:
-Creating a new Ontario Made logo that manufacturers can use to help consumers identify their made-in-Ontario products. CME will also meet with
major retailers to promote Ontario Made products in-store and increase visibility for customers;
-Launching a new SupportOntarioMade.ca website that will connect consumers and supply chain partners to manufacturers of made-in-Ontario products
through one directory;
-Promoting Ontario Made through a digital newsletter to raise awareness of Ontario goods and products online and through social media.

The Ford government will announce its plans for its third and final stage of reopening the Ontario economy at a news conference on Monday. “I can confirm details about Stage 3 will be announced tomorrow,” Premier Doug Ford’s spokesperson Ivana Yelich told CTV News Toronto. Ontario entered Stage 1 in late May and Stage 2 in a managed, phased effort through June and early July. Stage 3 will follow the same staggered, phased approach, sources told CTV News Toronto. The next stage could involve the resumption of activities such as indoor dining, bars, movie theatres and gyms. Mayor John Tory said last week that Stage 3 will also involve the reopening of all playground equipment across the province. The province’s previous reopening framework document also said Stage 3 could involve the reopening of casinos, amusement and waterparks, and certain indoor sports and related practice sessions. Ontario's recent COVID-19 case growth has been encouraging, with daily case growth in the low 100s most days and close to 90 per cent of all lab-confirmed infections now considered resolved.
In local news,
On Friday, July 10 workers at the General Motors Oshawa plant marked the milestone of one million masks produced locally for Health Canada. The occasion prompted a visit from federal ministers of Navdeep Bains, the minister of innovation, science and industry, and Anita Anand, the minister of public services and procurement. Bains, Anand, Whitby MP Ryan Turnbull and Unifor president Jerry Dias all toured the mask-making facility in Oshawa with GM Canada vice-president of corporate and environmental affairs David Paterson. They all donned jumpsuits, hair nets, protective eyewear, masks and gloves to visit the clean room where GM workers will produce a total of 10 million disposable masks for Health Canada.
Sports, Sports, Sports,
After weeks of speculation, the NHL has officially announced that pro hockey will return in August. All remaining games will be played in one of two ‘hub cities.’ Toronto has been selected as the Eastern Conference’s hub, while Edmonton will host the Western Conference teams. Today, training camps will open across Canada and the U.S. Although the game will be the same, the atmosphere won’t be. Five or six games will be played each day, with up to three daily games per city. The stands will be empty and fans won’t be allowed near the arenas. Once they arrive in Toronto and Edmonton, players will be kept in bubbles– tightly-controlled circles with strict health protocols and daily testing. The unusual hockey schedule would see the Stanley Cup awarded in either late September or early October. Due to the strange format, the NHL says the 2020-2021 hockey season won’t start up until at least December. The NHL suspended play back in mid-March.
Steve Simmons says this may be the last and best opportunity for a while for the ever-optimistic Maple Leafs to compete for the Stanley Cup. You see, the world is about to get very complicated for the Leafs and several other NHL teams who have spent money with the assumption the salary cap would continue to rise, and rise some more. In all the planning and organizing the Leafs and other clubs worked through, nobody budgeted for a pandemic. So, this is perhaps the last dance for a Leafs team with John Tavares, Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and William Nylander. The last dance with Frederik Andersen in goal and Morgan Rielly on defence. The last dance with Zach Hyman banging around in the corners.
Coronavirus forces the cancellation of Toronto FC match at MLS tournament. MLS deputy commissioner Mark Abbott made the announcement just minutes before the scheduled 9 a.m. ET kickoff at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports complex.
Musing,
Two words can slow a conversation. They are, "Ya, but...."
Two words will immediately destroy a conversation. They are, "Well, actually..."
(If you have ever said "well, actually" to someone during a conversation, you are an awful person and nobody likes you.)

On this day in 1990, Boris Yeltsin resigned from the Communist Party. Just two days after Mikhail Gorbachev was re-elected head of the Soviet Communist Party, Boris Yeltsin, president of the Republic of Russia, announced his resignation from the Party. Yeltsin’s action was a serious blow to Gorbachev’s efforts to keep the struggling Soviet Union together.
