Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 13,977,396. (Deaths: 593,438 and Recovered: 8,304,305) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:28 a.m. ET on Friday July 17, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 109,236 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
As of 10:00 a.m. (when Ontario updates its daily stats) the official Province of Ontario website is reporting 37,163 (up 111) total confirmed cases and 2,737 total deaths. Currently, there are 107 people are in hospital with 26 of those in ICU. 33,061 cases have been resolved.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 57,001. (142 new) Saskatchewan reported their biggest daily increase yesterday. Alberta adds more than 100 COVID-19 cases for the first time since early May. B.C. announces 21 more cases of COVID-19 as serology testing results released and one new case in Manitoba. This is not a good sign and why are such small numbers significant? Because, up until a weeks (or so) ago B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan had not been reporting any new cases.
The Region of Durham reported 1,773 (11 new) confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 1 current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 34 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington still sits at 102 total cases. (92 are resolved, 3 people are currently in isolation and 7 people have passed away. Hospitalized currently: "Zero")
In international news,
It's official, PM Trudeau confirms Canada-U.S. border closure extending to Aug. 21. The U.S. response? Read on.....
Trump Spokesperson On Border Closure: Americans Don’t Want To Go To Canada Anyway. Border restrictions on non-essential travel between Canada and the United States were officially extended until Aug. 21 this week amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. But a spokesperson for U.S. president Donald Trump’s campaign says he can’t imagine why Americans would want to come to Canada anyway. In an on-air interview for CNN Right Now with Brianna Keilar, Trump campaign press secretary Hogan Gidley was asked about the extended border restrictions in relation to Trump’s coronavirus response. In the CNN interview Gidley said, "Canada sucks, anyway".....folks, you just can't make this stuff up. When I watch the video, this knob reminds me of that kid in school that was always telling the teacher on other kids. OK, to him I would say this..."GIDLEY, DIDLEY, BIG FAT PIDLEY." Ah....there, I feel better.
1 In 3 Young People Face Severe COVID-19 Risks, Especially Smokers: Study reports. It’s widely understood that young people who contract COVID-19 will usually have mild viral symptoms. But the latest research suggests that one in three young adults are vulnerable to falling seriously ill, with those who smoke being particularly at risk. That significant number was found by University of California researchers, who studied more than 8,000 adults ages 18 to 25. They compared data taken from participants who participated in the U.S.’s largest health survey to known conditions that would exacerbate COVID-19: Factors like smoking, diabetes, obesity, or asthma.
In national news,
Feds to deliver more than $19B to provinces and territories in COVID-19 support. (Oh, by the way, nice distraction from the WE Charity scandal, justin.) Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday that a $19 billion deal has been reached between the federal government and the provinces and territories to help economies rebound from the pandemic. Trudeau said the funds will help communities prepare for a potential second wave and will go towards boosting testing capabilities, stockpiling personal protective equipment, and advancing municipal transportation.
The funds are a revisal to a pre-announced "safe-restart agreement" that had an initial price tag of $14 billion. Talks have been ongoing over the last several weeks between the federal government and the provinces and territories over the scale of support needed.
Russian hackers have tried to steal COVID-19 research. Russia has tried to steal information and intellectual property from researchers working on a COVID-19 vaccine, cyber security agencies in Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom are alleging. The major national security and intelligence threat was identified by the three countries as the result of “Russian cyber threat activity” directed at organizations that are doing research into and development of COVID-19 vaccines and treatment. “These malicious cyber activities were very likely undertaken to steal information and intellectual property relating to the development and testing of COVID-19 vaccines, and serve to hinder response efforts at a time when healthcare experts and medical researchers need every available resource to help fight the pandemic,” said the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) in a statement. I wonder who would win in a good old fashioned scrap, Putin or Trudeau? Putin is reputed to be a bit of a bad ass, but justin can throw hands as he was a boxer back in the day. (Remember in 2012, when he kicked Senator Brazeau's ass in the ring?)
In Ontario,
Ontario announces new funding model for long-term care beds. Ontario Premier Doug Ford says it can’t be business as usual at long-term care homes in our province. During his daily media conference, Ford announced details of the new $1.75-billion funding model to bring more long-term care beds in Ontario. Ford says his government “inherited a broken system” and the last few months with COVID-19 have made that crystal clear. He says the government hopes to build 30-thousand new long-term care beds in the next decade and he says air conditioning will be mandatory for new and renovated units. Ford says he expects thousands of new and updated beds will be in use by 2022. As for current protocol at long-term care homes, up two people are now able to visit seniors in the homes for an outdoor visit, the two people won’t require COVID-19 tests but they will still be screened. As of July 22nd, indoor visits will start again for visitors and essential caregivers with up two visitors at a time who will have to have tested negative for COVID-19. The visits will be scheduled and those coming to the home must wear a surgical mask.

Sports, Sports, Sports,
Are the COVID-19 gods warning us, or sending us a sign?? Thunderstorm floods Edmonton's Rogers Place, hub plans OK: Oilers Entertainment Group. A massive rainstorm flooded a cornerstone of one of the NHL's hub city locations Thursday evening. The Oilers Entertainment Group in Edmonton confirmed "Rogers Place has suffered some water damage to the terminus of Ford Hall, along with some smaller leaks in other parts of the building." A video posted and later deleted from the Oilers subReddit showed water cascading through the ceiling and pooling on the floor of the 104 Avenue entrance.
Musing,
Great article from Lakeridge Health on mask etiquette.
I used to get angry when a U.S. official slagged our great country. Now, I wear it as a badge of honour. I love the American people we know and have met, but I will tell you it will be a very long time before I even consider crossing the border.
Does anyone else have those damn giant house flies this year? WTF? Where did these invasive little bastards come from. Oh, wait.....
People at Wilmot Creek want to silence the train whistles near their homes? But, you bought houses beside the train tracks? What, exactly were you expecting?
On this day in 1955, Disneyland, Walt Disney’s metropolis of nostalgia, fantasy and futurism, opened. The $17 million theme park was built on 160 acres of former orange groves in Anaheim, California, and soon brought in staggering profits. Today, Disneyland hosts more than 18 million visitors a year, who spend close to $3 billion. Also, Douglas “Wrong Way” Corrigan crosses the Atlantic in 1938. (This is National Wrong Way Corrigan Day in his honour.)
