Lygenztia *576 (Somewhat unorthodox.....) Wednesday October 7, 2020

Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 36,083,208. (Deaths: 1,055,286 and Recovered: 27,172,695)
I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday October 7, 2020:
Health Canada reported 171,323 confirmed cases of COVID-19, to date. 17,799 cases are active, there have been 9,530 deaths and 143,994 people have recovered.

In international news,
Todays coronavirus news: Czech Republic adds record 4,400 new cases; New Zealand eliminates COVID-19 in the community for second time; India adds 72K virus cases.
>Coronavirus infections in the Czech Republic have hit a record high, surpassing 4,000 cases in one day for the first time. The Health Ministry said 4,457 people tested positive on Tuesday, almost 700 more than the previous record on Friday.
>New Zealand has again eliminated COVID-19 in the community as life is about to return normal in its largest city, Auckland. From midnight Wednesday, limits on public gatherings and activities will be lifted, though social distancing is advised. The Ministry of Health said the last six active cases associated with a minor outbreak in Auckland have recovered.
>India has registered more than 72,000 new coronavirus cases, driving the country’s total to 6.75 million. The Health Ministry also reported 986 deaths, taking the toll past 104,500. Nearly 10 states account for 77% of the total active cases in the country. India’s recovery rate stands at more than 84%. The government has cited that figure as a reason for further opening the economy by allowing movie theatres to partially reopen next week with 50% capacity. The health ministry also issued guidelines for large gatherings during upcoming religious festivals and barred people from touching idols and holy books at such events to prevent the spread of the virus.

Montenegro's senior Orthodox Christian cleric tests COVID-positive. The senior cleric of Montenegro’s Serbian Orthodox Church, who avoids mask-wearing and called a pilgrimage “God’s vaccine”, has tested positive for coronavirus, his office said on Wednesday. Metropolitan Amfilohije Radovic, 82, who wields big political influence as well as heading the largest Christian denomination, was diagnosed with COVID-19 on Tuesday but felt well after a night in hospital in the capital Podgorica. “He is under constant doctors’ care,” added the statement from his Metropolitanate office. From December until August this year, Amfilohije played a pivotal role in protests over a contested religious law in the tiny Balkan country of 620,000 people that is a member of the transatlantic NATO alliance and aspiring European Union member.

In national news,
From the huge sigh of relief for some son-in-laws file, Health minister says Canadians 'can make a difference' by celebrating Thanksgiving virtually. Canadians are being advised by health officials to hold virtual Thanksgiving celebrations this year as COVID-19 cases continue to surge in several parts of the country. In a press briefing in Ottawa on Tuesday, Health Minister Patty Hajdu said she understands that Canadians want to spend the national holiday with family but reminded them to consider the risks of getting together in-person. "As everyone knows, it's been a challenging week, and virtual dinners -- although less appealing -- rather than an in-person gathering can make a difference in reducing the spread of COVID," Hajdu said.

Anti-masker attended massive rally instead of self-isolating when returning to Canada: police. An anti-masker has been charged with breaking federal quarantine rules after allegedly attending a rally in Toronto with 500 unmasked people less than two weeks after returning to Canada. According to Toronto police, a man and woman were ordered to quarantine for 14 days after arriving in Canada at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Sept 20. Police said the man, who has been identified as King City resident Christopher Saccoccia, was spotted in the Yonge-Dundas Square area on Sept. 26 and was issued a provincial offence notice for breaching the Quarantine Act order. Saccoccia, who identifies by the name Chris Sky, has spoken out against public health measure in Canada during the pandemic. He has participated in several events advocating against wearing masks, including a protest in Toronto where he boarded multiple TTC vehicles maskless. Police alleged that on Oct. 3, Saccoccia and a woman identified as Jennifer Saccoccia, also from King City, went to a rally at Yonge-Dundas Square that was attended by 500 non-mask wearing people. They have both since been charged with failure to comply with an order prohibiting or subjecting to any condition the entry into Canada. These are the first criminal changes laid by Toronto police since the start of the pandemic for breaking the quarantine act. The charges have not been proven in court.

In Ontario,
Report of high COVID-19 test positivity rates in some Toronto neighbourhoods 'very concerning,' Dr. Yaffe says. Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health says a report indicating that more than 10 per cent of COVID-19 tests are coming back positive in a number of Toronto neighbourhoods is “very concerning” and the province will work to bring numbers down in those regions. On Monday, the Toronto Star reported that new provincial data, which was recently obtained by the newspaper and has not been made public, found that four areas of Toronto are seeing positivity rates above 10 per cent and two-thirds of the city has a test positivity rate of higher than three per cent, the benchmark set by Toronto Public Health (TPH). “I haven’t actually seen the data myself. I’ve read the article in the paper. That is very concerning,” Dr. Barbara Yaffe, Ontario’s associate chief medical officer of health, said at Queen’s Park on Tuesday. (Yesterday, Premier Ford and NDP leader Andrea Horvath had a heated exchange [again] in the house over this very matter.)
