Lygenztia *607 (You wanted it, you got it. Now you're going to get it..........) Wednesday January 20, 2021 [Lock-down: Day 7]
Worldwide stats provided by Worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 96,728,720. (Deaths: 2,068,341 and Recovered: 69,427,759)
I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:00 a.m. ET on Wednesday January 20, 2021:
Health Canada reported 719,751 confirmed cases of COVID-19, to date. 71,055 cases are active, there have been 18,266 deaths and 630,430 people have recovered.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 242,277 total confirmed cases and 5,479 total deaths. 27,615 are active. Currently, there are 1,626 people are in hospital with 400 of those cases currently in ICU. 209,183 cases have been resolved. The government has previously said that once the number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU exceeds 300, it becomes nearly impossible for health-care workers to provide care not related to the disease. Ontario has now surpassed Quebec in active cases.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 245,734. (19,017 are active)
The Region of Durham reported 9,843 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (807 active). Clarington rose to 710 cases, of which 66 are active. Hospitalized in Clarington currently: "1", total deceased: "9"
In international news,
The entire world is screwing Canada, because Justin is percieved as weak on the world stage. "Sunny ways"
There's the fucking international news, for today.
In national news,
(But, you can currently fly into Canada any old time you like?) PM warns Canada could impose new COVID-19 travel restrictions without notice. Citing the evolving situation with the identified COVID-19 variants from other countries, the prime minister is strongly urging Canadians not to travel because federal travel rules could change very quickly. In French, the prime minister implored anyone who has booked trips to cancel them, saying a vacation is not worth it given the uncertainty and chance of either contracting the virus or ending up stranded abroad. (So, international travellers are free to enter Canada, no worries! BUT, if you are a CANADIAN trying to get home, you could be screwed. Disgusting.)
Pfizer to halt COVID vaccine deliveries to Canada next week, slowing a lagging rollout. Justin Trudeau stressed the setback was temporary and said Canada would still receive four million doses of Pfizer’s product before the end of March. Canada will receive zero Pfizer vaccines next week as the company temporarily suspends deliveries, further slowing a vaccine rollout that is lagging behind other countries as the pandemic kills more Canadians every day. Pfizer first announced last week they would be reducing deliveries to all countries that receive shipments from their plant in Belgium, as the company upgrades the facility to ultimately produce more vaccines. The cut is expected to reduce shipments to Canada for the next three to four weeks. Maj.-Gen. Dany Fortin, who is overseeing the government’s rollout, said Canada received 82 per cent of its expected shipment of 208,000 doses this week, but would receive no deliveries next week. In the first two weeks of February, when doses had been set to rise to 367,000 a week, they would now be lower, before returning to expectations and growing in late February and into March. Doses of the Moderna vaccine will continue as normal, but Pfizer’s product has made up most of the deliveries so far.
In Ontario,
(Did she break the law? You decide...........) Ontario mother fined $880 under stay-at-home order for leaving children with grandparents. Natasha Kohl said she was pulled over by police after picking her children up from their grandparents' house. Police told her they had received a complaint from a neighbour. Natasha Kohl, a mother of four, told CTV News, she had dropped off the three children at her in-laws’ house in Delhi last weekend, so that she could do some grocery shopping. Her fiance, she said, wasn’t able to look after their children at that time. “He wasn’t able to help me and it was actually my birthday, so I wanted to get home so I could spend the night with him and my kids, so I took them to my father-in-law,” she said. When she returned to pick her kids up, they were having lunch with their uncle and cousins, who also live in the house. “So I was with them as they were eating their pizza,” Kohl told CTV News. Once they left the house, Kohl said she was pulled over by a provincial police officer. “He turned on his lights and pulled us over and my daughter said, ‘Why is he pulling us over?’ and I said, ‘I don’t know,’ so I waited for him to come to the window and that’s when he said "they had complaints of high traffic in the house,” she told Global News.Once ticketed, she was informed that officials would be speaking to her father-in-law about the complaint as well. A news release posted by the provincial police states that two people were charged with failing to comply with the Reopening Ontario Act. “It was determined that police were contacted after several people were seen at the residence. Officers attending the area subsequently stopped a vehicle seen leaving and conducted an investigation,” Const. Ed Sanchuk said in a news release, posted by OPP’s Norfolk county detachment. (My guess is, her fiance will be "able" to look after her children the next time she needs to buy groceries for their family.)
(Told you there would be more OFSC closures.) Health unit closes snowmobile trails in North Bay, Parry Sound areas. Effective Jan. 21 at 12:01 a.m., snowmobile trails in the North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit coverage area must close. The health unit said in a news release Monday all Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs trails and trails utilizing Crown Land trails have to stay closed until the province lifts the emergency stay-at-home order. "This closure is done under the medical officer of health’s ability to increase restrictions within their district," the release said. (By the end of January, most [if not all] OFSC trails will be closed, I bet.)
The Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters have back-tracked somewhat on their stance on ice-fishing, too. Initially, they informed their members (on January 13, 2021) that they had consulted with MNRF and ice fishing was still legal under the lock-down. This was posted to their Twitter feed @ofah :
"OFAH confirms with government officials that #fishing and #hunting may continue as long as public health guidelines are followed. http://ofah.org/covid19 #COVID19 #COVID19Ontario (2:23 PM · Jan 13, 2021·Twitter Web App)
However, OFAH subsequently posted this update/clarification on their Twitter feed:
"Anglers can continue to fish while observing new public health guidelines (group size), but explicit limitations on travel distances haven’t been established. There is no guarantee you won't get fined by an enforcement officer if they deem it non-essential travel." (10:38 AM · Jan 14, 2021·Twitter Web App)
I am in no way being critical of OFAH or OFSC, both of whom do excellent work. These issues just lend to the fact that everything changes quickly right now and people/groups are just doing the best they can.
In small town news,
Hastings Prince Edward Public Health has announced that they have given out their first COVID-19 vaccinations. They say they had given out 79 shots to residents and staff at a long term care home in Bellville. The members of the home received the Phizer-BioNtech vaccine. The vaccines come as the Health Unit’s caseload sits at 28 active cases. None of the cases have been recorded in North Hastings. Since the pandemic began, HPE has listed 358 cases, the majority being in Belleville. 17 of those cases were in North Hastings.
(HPE is a massive tract of land that encompasses approximately 6,654 square kilomteres and stretches from Belleville in the south to well past Bancroft in the North. The last reported population of HPE in 2011 was 117,057 which is now likely almost double that. So, in all of that 79 people have been vaccinated. Again, not criticizing the people that are doing this important work, but we just don't have the vaccines.)
Musing,
Well, my Canadian friends.....even though it was absolutely none of your business; you now have Joe Biden as president. And, one of his first acts was to SCREW Canada by unilaterally cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline with "zero" consultation. Alberta will never recover, economically. So, he's a nice guy and he doesn't say silly things. (He just gets confused under pressure......perfect!) Make no mistake, he doesn't give a fying fadoo about Canada, or its citizens.

Did you know............a satoshi is the smallest unit of a bitcoin, equal to 100 millionth of a bitcoin. Just like there are 100 cents in a dollar, there are 100 million sats in a bitcoin.
Have you ever....been given a silver dollar? (No, not a friggin loonie.)

On this day in history, Iran Hostage Crisis ends.
Minutes after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, are released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis. On November 4, 1979, the crisis began when militant Iranian students, outraged that the U.S. government had allowed the ousted shah of Iran to travel to New York City for medical treatment, seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran. The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s political and religious leader, took over the hostage situation, refusing all appeals to release the hostages, even after the U.N. Security Council demanded an end to the crisis in an unanimous vote. (Remember this, President Biden? It was Canada that got them out, not the U.S.A. But, there is a short memory south of the 49th paralell when it comes to helping your Canadian friends.)
