In international news,
German beer sales suffer as virus restrictions bite. Beer sales in Germany were down 5.5% last year, dragged lower by lengthy closures of bars and restaurants in the coronavirus pandemic, official data showed Monday. German-based breweries and distributors sold 8.7 billion litres (2.3 billion gallons) of beer last year, the Federal Statistical Office said. That figure doesn't include alcohol-free beer or beer imported from outside the European Union. German beer sales have been declining for years as a result of health concerns and other factors. They have now fallen 22.3% since 1993.

In national news,
Several Canadian corporations band together for COVID-19 rapid testing project. Pilot project involving about a dozen companies involves use of antigen tests distributed by Ottawa. Some of Canada's top airlines, banks and sports teams have united to pilot rapid tests identifying COVID-19 in hopes that they can find a way to reopen workplaces. The pilot is being run by the University of Toronto's Creative Destruction Lab, which has partnered with 12 companies including Air Canada and Rogers Communications Inc. to experiment with antigen tests that take about 15 minutes to deliver results. Those behind the project believe it could give Canada's corporate world a road map to quelling the spread of COVID-19 in workplaces that have had to close or have struggled to contain outbreaks. "What we are trying to do is break the chain of transmission," said Ajay Agrawal, the founder of the Creative Destruction Lab, a non-profit helping science and tech firms.

In Ontario,
(Cost of doing business??.........) About 40 per cent of Ontario businesses inspected over weekend violated COVID-19 rules. About 40 per cent of businesses inspected in Ontario over the weekend were found to not be complying with provincial COVID-19 regulations. According to officials, 428 businesses in Toronto, Hamilton and Kitchener-Waterloo were visited by provincial offence officers on Saturday and Sunday. In total, 48 tickets were issued to businesses and individuals for not complying with COVID-19 public health measures. Businesses visited included big-box stores, independent grocery stores, gas stations convenience stores, discount stores that sell food and restaurants providing take out. The province did not name the businesses that were ticketed under the Reopening Ontario Act. Of the 48 tickets handed out over the weekend, 17 were given out at stores in Toronto, 19 were issued in Hamilton and 12 were distributed in Kitchener-Waterloo. Compliance rate was highest in Toronto at 70.6 per cent, followed by Kitchener-Waterloo at 54.6 per cent. Slightly under half of businesses inspected in Hamilton (49.6 per cent) were found to be compliant with COVID-19 regulations. On Sunday afternoon, Minister of Labour Monte McNaughton said there are “no excuses at this point in the game” to be found non-compliant with the rules.

In small town news,
‘We're all just doing our best’: online learning tips for harried parents. Durham teachers understanding of challenges families face. Since schools across Durham switched to all-online learning in January, families have struggled to balance the new responsibility. Durham teachers are cognizant of the burden placed on families, and know that every child will adjust to their new school routine differently. “We’re very aware of the challenges, and teachers are understanding of the limitations families are experiencing,” said Mary Fowler, president of Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario’s Durham chapter, citing examples including bandwidth, access to internet and devices, behaviour issues, screen time, conflicting schedules and more.

Musing,
Ok, so it would appear that very, very few people are contracting the flu and the common cold this year. They attribute this to lack of contact, masks etc. So, I sonder when we start to contract the common cold and flu again in future will the symptoms be more severe, or the same as always? Guess we will see.
