Lygenztia *619 (Can groundhogs predict the end of the lock-down?..........) Tuesday February 2, 2021 [Lock-down: Day 19]

Worldwide stats provided by Worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 103,997,587. (Deaths: 2,249,611 and Recovered: 70,843,071)
I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.

As of 6:00 a.m. ET on Tuesday February 2, 2021:
Health Canada reported 783,589 confirmed cases of COVID-19, to date. 51,745 cases are active, there have been 20,136 deaths and 711,708 people have recovered.

The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 270,180 total confirmed cases and 6,224 total deaths. 19,107 are active. Currently, there are 1,158 people are in hospital with 354 of those cases currently in ICU. 244,939 cases have been resolved. The government has previously said that once the number of COVID-19 patients in the ICU exceeds 300, it becomes nearly impossible for health-care workers to provide care not related to the disease. Ontario has now surpassed Quebec in active cases.

Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 263,473. (13,564 are active)

The Region of Durham reported 10,775 confirmed cases of COVID-19 (475 active). Clarington rose to 781 cases, of which 30 are active. Hospitalized in Clarington currently: "3", total deceased: "12"

In international news,
(Which country came to Canada's aid? Yes, that would be "none".) Austria and Germany come to Portugal’s aid. Austria and Germany have said they will provide help to Portugal, which is grappling with skyrocketing coronavirus cases. Austria is to take patients from Portugal who need intensive care, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Sunday, saying “swift, unbureaucratic help” was needed to save sick people. The German army will also send medical assistance and staff to Portugal to help deal with the country’s coronavirus outbreak, saying that details were being finalised. Portugal has suffered more than 12,000 deaths from Covid-19, with around half recorded in January alone. (Try to prove me wrong, show me a case of any other country on the planet that provided any significant assistance to the Great White North.)

In national news,
(From the "Ya, ya....sure" file.) Canada on verge of deal to produce COVID-19 vaccines domestically. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce Tuesday the makings of an agreement to produce COVID-19 vaccines within Canada. Industry Minister Francois-Phillipe Champagne tells The Canadian Press the government is moving quickly to start making COVID-19 vaccines itself, instead of being entirely reliant on foreign production for the most sought-after product in the world. The deal could help Trudeau tamp down the political headache caused by Canada's skeletal vaccine production capacity. (And the budget will balance itself...) By the way, independent experts agree it will take a year to build such a facility.

In Ontario,
Ontario sees first case of South African COVID-19 variant. A Peel resident is Ontario’s first case of the South African variant of COVID-19. Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. David Williams said Monday the case had no recent travel history and had no contact with anyone who did travel. Dr. Williams said while this is the first case, it may not be the only one. He says he wouldn’t be shocked if the Brazilian variant of the virus is found as well. He said the South African strain does appear to be more easily transmissible, but studies have yet to determine if the disease carries more severe symptoms and outcomes.

Ontario's Wiarton Willie and Nova Scotia's Shubenacadie Sam will make their annual predictions in front of no crowds, instead the critters' emergence from their homes will be broadcast. Folklore has it that if a groundhog sees its shadow on Feb. 2, it will retreat into its burrow, heralding six more weeks of cold weather. No shadow is said to foretell spring-like temperatures are on the way. Janice Jackson, the mayor of Wiarton, Ont., says that the town in the South Bruce Peninsula has pivoted the celebration of its famous albino groundhog to a webcast.

In small town news,
Half of new COVID-19 cases in Kawartha Lakes and Northumberland due to outbreaks at long-term care homes. Medical officer of health says all area long-term care residents to be vaccinated by February 5. COVID-19 cases in the Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit remain in an upswing, primarily due to worsening outbreaks in area long-term care homes. “Because of the restrictions that are in place, we are seeing quieter days sometimes, but we still have had over 150 cases in the last two weeks,” said Dr. Ian Gemmill, acting medical officer of health, during a virtual media briefing on Wednesday (January 27). “About half of those new cases are in outbreaks,” Dr. Gemmill said.

Coronavirus Outbreak Declared At Central East Correctional Centre In Lindsay. The Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit has declared a Coronavirus outbreak at the Central East Correctional Centre in Lindsay. “The ministry can confirm that the Central East Correctional Centre has two active inmate cases of COVID-19 and two COVID-positive cases among staff.” Andrew Morrison Media Relations, Ministry of the Solicitor General told Kawartha 411. The health unit is reporting 19 new cases of Coronavirus in the City of Kawartha Lakes today. Another 9 cases were reported over the weekend. There’s currently 53 active cases of the virus in Kawartha Lakes with the health unit tracking 68 high risk contacts. There has been 425 cases of Coronavirus locally to date. 41 people have died.

Musing,
So, some Canadians are "scrambling" to get home and then complaining about mandatory hotel quarantine when they get home? I've got 4 words for you: Cry me a river. We have wanted to travel, as have my friends but we were told not to. We were warned not to. So, for those that have to pay the exorbitant costs....tough beans.

Remember last year, when the government told us to go away on March break and enjoy ourselves? Then came St. Patrick's Day and widespread closures/panic.....oooops!

The goal is to die with memories not dreams.” (UNKNOWN)

Did you know......642,000 foreign students studied in Canada in 2019. (22 per cent came from China, 34 per cent from India) Now, some universities are hurting bad for revenue as international students are not coming here during the pandemic. Or, are they?

Have you ever...been turned down for acceptance by a university?

WTF is ...............Candlemas?

On this day in history, First Groundhog Day.
On February 2, 1887, Groundhog Day, featuring a rodent meteorologist, is celebrated for the first time at Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. According to tradition, if a groundhog comes out of its hole on this day and sees its shadow, it gets scared and runs back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter weather; no shadow means an early spring. Groundhog Day has its roots in the ancient Christian tradition of Candlemas, when clergy would bless and distribute candles needed for winter. The candles represented how long and cold the winter would be. Germans expanded on this concept by selecting an animal—the hedgehog—as a means of predicting weather. Once they came to America, German settlers in Pennsylvania continued the tradition, although they switched from hedgehogs to groundhogs, which were plentiful in the Keystone State.

Today is - NATIONAL GROUNDHOG DAY - NATIONAL HEAVENLY HASH DAY - NATIONAL TATER TOT DAY
