If you are going out to eat or grab a few drinks and you can't get the table before everyone else arrives, you are socially incompetent.
Now, if I am going out with friends or relatives and I get there first (which is frequent when drinks are involved) I go in, get a table and get situated.
This has two effects:
1) It demonstrates that you are socially competent.
2) It shows the people you are meeting that you care about their comfort and look forward to seeing them.
It really grinds my gears when I arrive and there are people waiting in their vehicle. "Oh, we were waiting for you guys to get here before we got a table." Well, ain't that awesome. Now, there is a lovely line we have to wait in. Had they got the table when they arrived, nobody would have to wait, everyone would have been all set. This helps the ambiance, mood and conversation.
If I arrive and my friends/family have already got the table, I always make a point to thank them. "Hey, thanks for getting the table guys. That was very thoughtful." Now, everyone is smiling, happy and the tone is set.
Please, if you get there first just get the damn table.
