The mystery of the Loge le Havre de Grace Masonic Lodge “Founder Medal”
Some time ago, I was given a masonic medal by an old friend that was found in her deceased fathers’ belongings. Her father’s name was Nick Pappas and he hailed from Shuniah Lodge 287, Thunder Bay, Ontario. She asked that I gather what information I could and knew that I would appreciate the artifact, being a Freemason myself. The medal belonged to J.E. Thompson of Port Arthur, Ontario. The “Founder” medal indicated “No. 4” and “Founded by Allied Military” and was dated 1916. Other than that, little was known about it.
My search was extremely fortunate to find an article an old edition of the Rifle and Apron, written by provided by Brother Lieutenant Joseph F. Curry. The article goes on to state:
"In World War I, a Masonic Lodge was established at Le Havre, France. Le Havre de Grace No. 4 was warranted under the "Grande Loge Nationale lndependante et Regulier pour la France et les Colonies Francaises." Seventy Masons were listed as founding members, representing Mother Lodges in England, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, Australia, India, Malta, Gibraltar, South Africa, and the United States.
"At the ceremony of consecration, on October 31, 1916, the following words were spoken by the Chaplain: "Surrounded as we are with an atmosphere charged with so much disruption, disunion, and discord, with lowering clouds of hate and strife, through which at present there appears to be but a faint light penetrating - a light which we hope is indicative of the future blaze of joy and happiness - we launch this ship of Peace and Harmony."
"Carleton Lodge No. 465 in Carp, Ontario eventually acquired the furnishings from Loge le Havre, where they are still in use today."
“where they are still in use today” was the link that I needed and had been searching for.
I then connected with W. Bro Blake Farmer, the Secretary of Carleton Lodge 465 in Carp, Ontario. He informed me that Carleton Lodge did indeed have the original furniture (altar, lesser lights, etc.) from Le Havre de Grace, France. It was not entirely clear how the items made it from France to Carp, but it was facilitated by the (then) Secretary, whose last name was “Thompson”. It is not clear at this time whether that Secretary is the same person as the brother’s name on the Founder medal i.e. “J.E. Thompson”.
The Founder medal bears a manufacturer stamp “Spencer and Co. Masonic manufacturers” (England). W. Bro. Farmer confirmed the furniture in their Lodge bears the same manufacturer stamp. In 1947, Toye Kenning acquired Spencer and Co.
In my communication with W. Bro. Farmer about the Founder medal I advised him I would be returning the medal to their Lodge. That way, it could accompany the other artifacts being kept at Carleton Lodge, where it rightfully belonged.
On Thursday April 25th, 2024, in the presence of Grand Master Hogeboom, I returned the Founders medal where it was finally re-united with Carleton Lodge and the remaining artifacts from Loge Le Havre, France.
Ergo the medal’s journey back, after a 108 year absence spanning two world wars, two continents, troop ships across the Atlantic, troop trains to Port Arthur, tales of battles fought, memories of comrades lost, several generations of safe keepers and many loving hands to finally ‘come home’ and be reunited with the other remaining artifacts of Loge Le Havre.

Lygenztia *677 (Cuba.....) April 21, 2024 ( a few days late)
As previously mentioned, I strive to publish once a week on Friday.
But, this Friday past I was in Cuba with a friend. He needed help to bring his dogs home. Which is another blog (or book) all on its own.
Cuba feels like going back in time. Classic cars, the architecture, antiquated power grid. Cattle, chickens, goats...just wandering around. With the chickens, I can never figure out how they keep track of who owns which chicken.
We get off to a "not good start" because we took a taxi to the wrong hotel. So, then we have to get another taxi to the correct hotel. But, it's not all bad! When we check in, the hotel clerk says "I have big suprise". Turns out we were upgraded to massive, beautiful 5 star rooms. Don't know how (yet) but we were.
We spent two days at the pool, doing cool guy stuff and we were also blessed with a lovely visit from a Cuban fellow, who is a friend of my friend. I could have listened to him for hours, his stories were so fascinating and he was so proud. Cubans have little, but they are proud, innovative and resilient. It turns out our Cuban friend works for the hotel chain, so it all comes together and makes sense. He set us up with the nice rooms.
It was blast, but three days/two nights were enough given we were two guys with no adult supervision. I made it home. But my liver? Well, I think I left that in Cuba.

Why do we randomly think of someone? Are they thinking about you, too? Is it cosmic energy? Which synapses fire when you suddenly think to yourself 'Hey, wonder what Jimmy is up to?' And, why Jimmy? Why not Jane?
This often happens when drinking. (Don't tell me you have never random texted someone after you have had a few.) Sometimes, something reminds us of the person, like a story we share, or hear. What fascinates me the most is when there is no reminder, prompt or stimuli and someone just randomly pops into our brain.
Is there an old wive's tale for this phenomenon? What the hell is an old wive's tale, anyway?
Daniel Kahneman and Charles Duhigg have written some great books on how/why we think. They are written in such a way that the common person can understand them. They speak to this topic in an informed manner, unlike my troglodite philosophy...check them out.
Never know, one day you may randomly think of those authors, or me, or Jimmy. Maybe even Jane.

Lygenztia *675 (Special...............) April 5, 2024
Back on New Year's Day, I resolved to post every friday. For the most part, I have held true. I don't make many resolutions, but when I do I try to keep them. Case in point, drink my coffee "black" only. Easy to follow and I kept that resolution.
At any rate, this topic grabbed me. Like a kitten grabs a ball of yarn.
As a precursor to this blog, I must go on the record. I loathe videos, tik-tok, youtube, etc. When friends/relatives send them, I just delete them and never watch. I lie and say I did, but I never watch them.
But, it appears, my hypocrisy knows no bounds. This morning I was in the hot tub and some videos popped up of people doing outrageous things. In one, guys on dirtbikes deliberately trespassed onto ptivate property just to irritate the landowner and then they harrassed him when he caught up. In another, some asshole slaps some random guy in the head at an outdoor cafe, then runs away. Funny? Nopes.
You know what would be funny? If the guys on the dirtbikes wiped out and broke their backs. That, would be funny. Or the guy that slapped the unsuspecting guy get's crushed by an 18-wheeler as he runs away. Now that would be hilarious.
As the saying goes, mess with the bull....
The fuck is wrong with people? Goddam videos.

When I blog, I use USA statistics, unless the topic is very Canada specific.
Why? Because I have absolutely zero trust in the Canadian government.
I am not a conspiracy nut. But I can apply critical thinking and my common sense tells me you can't piss on my leg and tell me it's raining.
It's just such a sad state of affairs.
We have been lied to so much...COVID, SNC-Lavalin, ethics scandals, China influence/election meddling, the Ottawa trucker protest. It goes on and on and on. The saddest part, is that Canadian's have just accepted it. We take it, much like an abused child accepts their situation as "normal". I get it, politician's have always lied. All parties. But what we are experiencing in the modern age far eclipses any of that. State control of the media perpetuates, distributes and forces mass consumption of the lie. The lie is a well-run Canada sponsored machine.
And if you think the media is not controlled by the state, you are a fool. If you don't tow the line, you don't get the Canada media grants and you sure as hell don't get to attend the media scrums, press conferences or have access to our politicians. Yes, they control who gets to attend press confererences. So, ask a difficult question and you just may find your news agency "un-invited" to future press conferences, scrums and politician interviews. Ask Rebel News, if you don't believe me.
How do we regain trust in the Canadian government? I don't know, because the "lie machine" genie is out of the bottle. As Canadian's we don't fight back, like our American neighbours............and they know it.

Before reading this, I encourage you to watch this documentary. "The truth about killer robots"
Mankind is in the birth of artificial Intelligence, otherwise known by the acronym "A.I." Intriguing? Disturbing? Or just plain scary? I am not a luddite, but I am aware of the world around me and I think everyone else should be, too. To that end, I recently complete a course on artificial intelligence at the University of Michigan. I wanted to learn about this nebulous "A.I." thing. My thinking being, how can I get ahead of it and how can it help me?
Well, i've got news for you. Ain't nobody getting ahead of it, because it is moving faster than any of us can even imagine. No regulation, no oversight, no laws...it's the wild west.
Automated (self driving) trucks, taxis, delivery vehicles......they are all just around the corner. (pardon the pun) They are already here in North America actually, just in very small numbers, or "being tested". For now.
These are the current most in-demand jobs and fastest growing jobs in the USA:
Home health and personal care aides. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
Cooks at restaurants. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
Software developers. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
Fast food and counter workers. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
General and operations managers. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
Waiters and waitresses. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
Registered nurses.(see Moravec's paradox, below)
Labourers and freight, stock, and material movers. (A.I. and robots will be able to do this)
And, in many of the above, they already are. Reference Japan and China.
I don't mean to be all doom and gloom, because I think that opportunity will come with the increased presence of A.I. But, for unskilled workers, it is bleak. Hopefully Moravec's paradox proves true, because if not there will be little hope for the unskilled worker.

Death, is always a sad thing. It's not always tragic, sometimes it is merciful. Sometimes, it just "is".
I've never understood why we attach higher importance on death when the relative of a person of rank or higher position is involved. When the person who works in the warehouse or mailroom has a mother that passes away, those closest in that department rally around. But it just does not seem to garner the same proportion of attention as when the plant manager's mother passes away.
When that happens, a plant-wide collection is taken up, people are excused (and expected) to attend the funeral. Sympathy pours in. It just seems so skewed to me.
Now, of course this does not happen everytime, but for the most part this is the way things usually fall out. And, it is unfortunate.
I don't think any of this means we don't care. It just seems that we attach a higher importance based on the person's "status" .......or lack thereof.
Is it "kissing up", is it human nature? I don't know, you tell me....i'm listening.
