Lygenztia *500 (Looking pretty close out there?) Monday June 8, 2020
I took a little break from blogging to enjoy the weekend and try to cleanse my soul. Back at it today with my 500th "article".
Worldwide stats provided by worldometers put the global COVID-19 number of reported cases today at 7,109,867. (Deaths: 406,469 and Recovered: 3,468,899) I emphasize reported because there is a wide variance in testing and manner of reporting from country to country and place to place.
As of 6:34 a.m. ET on Monday June 8, 2020:
From Global News, Canada reported 95,684 confirmed cases of COVID-19.
The official Province of Ontario website is reporting 30,617 total confirmed cases and 2,426 total deaths. Currently, there are 635 people are in hospital with 117 in ICU. 24,252 cases have been resolved. There are some really cool tracking charts in this article.
++UPDATE++ (10:29 a.m.) Ontario records the lowest number of new COVID-19 cases in more than two months! Health officials in Ontario recorded 243 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, the lowest number of new infections since late March. The news comes after the ministry of health reported more than 400 cases on both Saturday and Sunday, though those numbers were inflated due to an error in lab reporting.
Quebec continues to have the highest reported cases in the country with 52,849.
The Region of Durham reported 1,576 confirmed cases of COVID-19. The site also reports 9 (one new) current outbreaks at Hospitals, LTCF's and Retirement Homes with 24 outbreaks having been "concluded." Currently, Clarington is at 94 cases. In Durham Region the community spread rate of the cases currently sits at 20%, with 60% being contracted in institutional settings.
In international news,
From the "What's your point?" file, Joe Biden clinches the Democratic nomination in U.S. race for president. He no longer had any (legitimate) challengers. Look forward to Trump in office for another term, because Biden can't beat him. No way.
From the "Everyone's worst nightmare" file, A 3m (10ft) great white shark has killed a surfer in northern New South Wales, police in the Australian state have said. The shark bit the leg of the surfer, aged between 50 and 60, off Kingscliff, 800km (500 miles) north of Sydney. Several "heroic" boarders tried to help the man by fighting off the shark but although he was brought to the beach, he died there of his wounds. This is the third fatal shark attack in Australian waters this year.
Sesame Street has jumped into the fray by raising awareness of the nationwide protests and racism in their kids shows.
Banksy too, apparently. (Banksy is a world famous artist, for more info click here.) The elusive street artist known as Banksy has shared a powerful piece of new artwork in support of the Black Lives Matter movement as anti-racism protests continue across the globe. The anonymous artist's latest work depicts the United States flag slowly being set on fire by a candle that forms part of a vigil for a black, silhouetted figure. The painting was shared on Banksy's Instagram page on Saturday, along with a statement that says it is the responsibility of white people to fix the system that is failing Black people.
New Zealand is now officially free of COVID-19! Good job, folks!
Looks like the chinese government has allowed the World Health Organization to issue an update/release on masks. The WHO has new advice for wearing masks and making your own. I don't know what their advice is, nor do I care. The WHO to me, is an irrelevant political machine. I don't agree with Trump on much, but on this one he is spot-on. Read the Epoch Times for an interesting backgrounder on Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization.
In national news,
Canada’s highest court has been asked to weigh in on a highly controversial ruling that has reopened the door for people accused of violent crimes to use ‘intoxication’ as a defence. On Wednesday, two men who either killed or seriously injured close relatives while under the influence of drugs saw their convictions overturned. In 1995, Ottawa faced backlash over a court ruling that suggested people could defend themselves against sexual assault charges by saying they were very drunk. Back then, the federal government passed a law that made it so violent criminals couldn’t argue that severe intoxication caused them to lose control of what they were doing– in a state sometimes called ‘automatism.’ However, earlier in the week, the Court of Appeal struck down that decades-old section of the Criminal Code as ‘unconstitutional.’
Bad news for the underground economy in Canada....Canadians more than ever are ordering online or tapping their cards. Will cash be able to make a comeback? The government will be very, very pleased with this because the less cash we use, the more they (CRA) can track our purchases. So, the old question "Do you need a bill?, (under the table) may become a thing of the past because you will have to pay electronically. (Car repairs, home reno's, babysitting, cleaners, manual labour, haircuts, firewood, caterers...the list goes ever and anon)
Federal Liberal Member of Parliament Marwan Tabbara said he is “stepping back from the Liberal caucus” but not resigning as an MP after revelations he was criminally charged with assault, break and enter and criminal harassment. Tabbara, 35, was charged with two counts of assault, one count of break and enter and commit an indictable offence and one count of criminal harassment — back in April — for an alleged incident in a neighbouring Ontario riding. Neither the Guelph Police nor the Trudeau government revealed the charges to the public until the National Post and two other media organizations directly asked police about them on Thursday.
Interesting, he was charged back in April, but Canadians never heard anything about this from justin? Sunny ways, justin? I think not.
In Ontario,
Premier Doug Ford has announced that all existing emergency orders related to COVID-19 will be extended until June 19. The emergency orders are separate from the actual state of emergency, which was recently extended until June 30. BUT, you still won’t be able to gather in groups of more than five people and, for now, restaurants will have to stick to take-out or delivery. C'mon Frosty's!!!
Ontario Premier Doug Ford will announce details on the next stage of the province's reopening plan today. Ford will be joined by Health Minister Christine Elliott, Finance Minister Rod Phillips, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Vic Fedeli and Minister of Labour, Training and Skills Development Monte McNaughton to make the announcement at Queen’s Park at 1 p.m. The premier stressed last week that while details of Stage 2 are being released, it will not come into effect right away.
Yesterday, Ontario recorded over 400 new COVID-19 cases but over half were impacted by a "reporting delay". Look to the B.C. public health model for improved consistency in reporting confirmed cases.
Toronto protests were large and peaceful, with the exception of a few isolated incidents.
In local happenings,
Durham police are looking for suspects after two trailer thefts in Orono. A a black 15-foot tandem axle hauler trailer was stolen from a Clarington business located near Highway 115 and Cobbledick Road in Orono. A black Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck was captured on surveillance video pulling the trailer away from the business.
Oshawa residents gathered yesterday to rally against systemic racism. The Oshawa #BlackLivesMatter Memorial Rally and Protest was peaceful. I do tend to hack a little on Oshawa, but good for them on this one. They should be proud.
As the COVID-19 pandemic drags into the third month, Clarington has managed to get through without a big layoff of full-time staff — so far. However, the pandemic has impacted Clarington’s budget, with late property taxes and utility investment income and lost facility and field rental revenues. Council is starting to debate municipal staffing levels.
Musing,
We were in more than one small northern town this over the weekend. Along with ongoing protests in Ontario, social distancing is visibly absent. People are either over it, or no longer afraid of it..
facebook took down numerous accounts belonging to white supremacists. Good on facebook. I have absolutely no use for these groups, their ideals, ideology or methods. That said, I remain uncomfortable with the increasing censorship that we are seeing from social media platforms. I get the intent and these things always start off meaning well, but they slowly end up somewhere else that tends to be insidious and irreversible. I have no use for social media, but millions (billions??) around the globe, do. I highly recommend this book, THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A FUCK by Mark Manson.
